Building Blocks of 7th Grade Math equips students with a robust foundation in essential mathematical concepts, preparing them for success in 7th grade and beyond, with a focus on number series, equation solving, and geometry, and building strong problem-solving capabilities. By the end of this course, students will be able to confidently tackle complex problems and apply mathematical principles in real-world contexts.

Number Sense and Operations

  • Prime factorization — break down numbers into their prime components
  • Greatest common factor (GCF) — identify the largest factor shared by two or more numbers
  • Least common multiple (LCM) — determine the smallest multiple shared by two or more numbers
  • Number series — understand patterns and relationships in sequences of numbers

Exponents and Powers

  • Understanding exponents — learn the relationship between base and exponent
  • Powers with negative bases — explore how negative numbers behave when raised to powers
  • Repeated multiplication — how exponents denote repeated multiplication
  • Exponent rules — how to multiply and divide exponential terms

Algebraic Thinking and Equations

  • Identifying expressions and equations — distinguish between mathematical phrases and complete statements
  • Solving one-variable equations — master techniques to isolate variables and find solutions
  • Modeling equations with visuals — use diagrams to represent and solve equations
  • Two-variable equations — understand relationships between two unknowns and their graphical representation

Coordinate Plane

  • Plotting points — how to find a point based on x and y coordinates
  • Graphing linear equations — how to turn equations into lines on a graph
  • Coordinate pairs — how to describe the location of points using coordinate pairs

Sequences

  • Recognizing number patterns — identifying arithmetic and geometric sequences
  • Finding next terms — use patterns to predict the upcoming values
  • Writing algebraic expressions — to describe number sequences

Geometry: Lines, Angles, and Polygons

  • Acute angles — angles less than 90 degrees
  • Obtuse angles — angles greater than 90 degrees but less than 180 degrees
  • Right angles — angles that measure exactly 90 degrees
  • Polygons — closed figures formed by line segments and properties of polygons (number of sides, angles)
