Building Blocks of 5th Grade Math equips students with essential quantitative reasoning skills, focusing on operations, decimals, fractions, and percentages. Students will develop a strong number sense and be able to confidently solve real-world math problems and apply them to everyday situations.

Order of Operations

  • Understand the standard order of operations — PEMDAS/BODMAS
  • Solve multi-step expressions involving parentheses, exponents, multiplication, division, addition, and subtraction
  • Apply order of operations to solve real-world mathematical problems.

Decimal Operations

  • Compare and order decimals to the hundredths place
  • Add, subtract, multiply, and divide decimals using various strategies — including visual models and standard algorithms
  • Solve word problems involving decimal operations in practical contexts like money and measurement

Fraction Fundamentals

  • Review fraction concepts — including equivalent fractions, simplifying fractions, and comparing fractions
  • Add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators — finding common denominators efficiently
  • Multiply and divide fractions — including mixed numbers

Fractions, Decimals, and Percentages

  • Convert between fractions, decimals, and percentages fluidly
  • Apply fraction and percentage conversions to real-world scenarios — such as calculating discounts or tips
  • Solve percentage problems — finding the percentage of a number, the part, or the whole

Problem Solving Strategies

  • Apply different problem solving strategies — bar models, looking for a pattern, working backwards
  • Interpret word problems and translate them into mathematical expressions
  • Check the reasonableness of answers

Mathematical Communication

  • Explain mathematical reasoning clearly and concisely
  • Use appropriate mathematical vocabulary
  • Justify solutions and strategies

Engaging with Math

  • Develop a growth mindset — learn from mistakes, ask questions, and persevere
  • Connect math to personal interests and real-world situations
  • Collaborate with peers to solve problems and share ideas
