Building Blocks of 4th Grade Math equips students with a robust understanding of essential mathematical concepts, strengthening their number sense and problem-solving abilities. This course focuses on developing a strong foundation in place value, decimals, and fractions, preparing students for more advanced mathematical topics. By the end of this course, students will confidently manipulate numbers, solve equations, and apply mathematical principles to real-world scenarios.

Place Value & Number Forms

  • Explore the base-ten system — understanding how each digit's position determines its value.
  • Convert between standard form, word form, and expanded form — developing fluency in representing numbers in multiple ways.
  • Decompose and compose numbers — reinforcing the relationship between digits and their place value.

Decimal Operations & Ordering

  • Ordering decimals — understanding and comparing decimals to the thousandths place.
  • Apply the base-ten system to decimals — seeing how multiplying and dividing by ten shifts the decimal point.
  • Relate decimals to fractions — solidifying the connection between these two representations of numbers.

Fraction Fundamentals

  • Understand fractions as parts of a whole — identifying numerators and denominators.
  • Compare and order fractions with like and unlike denominators — using visual models and equivalent fractions.
  • Explore equivalent fractions — generating different forms of the same fractional value.

Problem Solving with Fractions and Decimals

  • Solve word problems involving fractions — applying addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
  • Translate real-world scenarios into decimal expressions — setting up and solving equations.
  • Use models and diagrams — visualizing and solving problems involving fractions and decimals.

Geometric Shapes

  • Recognize and classify different types of geometric shapes — focusing on quadrilaterals, triangles, and circles.
  • Measure angles and identify geometric properties — such as symmetry, congruence, and similarity.
  • Calculate area and perimeter — applying formulas to solve practical measurement problems.

Introduction to Algebraic Thinking

  • Use variables to represent unknown quantities — laying the groundwork for algebraic equations.
  • Solve simple equations — using inverse operations to isolate variables and find solutions.
  • Identify patterns and relationships in numerical data — developing predictive models.
