Building Blocks of 3rd Grade Math equips students with a strong foundation in place value, number representation, and basic arithmetic, preparing them to confidently tackle more complex mathematical concepts. Through hands-on activities using base-ten blocks and engaging discussions, students will develop a deep understanding of how numbers work and gain proficiency in representing them in various forms. By the end of this course, learners will be able to fluently work with numbers up to the millions place and apply their knowledge to solve real-world problems.

Place Value Fundamentals

  • Understanding the definition of a digit — a symbol representing a whole number.
  • Identifying place values up to millions using place value charts.
  • Recognizing that each place value increases by a factor of ten as you move to the left.
  • Understanding the difference between the digit and the value of the digit within a number.

Number Representation

  • Standard form — writing numbers using digits.
  • Word form — expressing numbers using written words.
  • Expanded form — breaking down numbers to show the value of each digit, using addition.
  • Base-ten blocks — using manipulatives to visualize place value concepts.

Building and Decomposing Numbers

  • Composing numbers using base-ten blocks to represent place values.
  • Decomposing numbers into their constituent place values — understanding that 3,461 is 3 thousands, 4 hundreds, 6 tens, and 1 one.
  • Writing numbers in expanded form to illustrate their place value components — for example, 4,567 = 4000 + 500 + 60 + 7.
  • Converting between standard, word, and expanded forms of numbers.

Comparing Values

  • Comparing the value of a digit based on its position in a number — understanding that 1 million is significantly greater than 8 ones.
  • Relating place value to real-world contexts — such as understanding monetary value and making informed decisions.

Working with Decimals (Introduction)

  • Identifying where decimals are used in everyday situations — money, measurements.
  • Understanding that decimals separate whole numbers from parts of a whole.
  • Distinguishing between whole numbers and decimal numbers.

Problem Solving with Place Value

  • Using place value understanding to solve word problems — applying the concepts learned to practical scenarios.
  • Determining missing digits in numbers based on place value clues.
  • Ordering and comparing numbers based on their place values.

Reinforcement and Review

  • Participating in interactive exercises to reinforce place value concepts.
  • Answering questions and clarifying doubts in real-time.
  • Engaging with emojis and abbreviations in chat for quick responses.
