WHAT YOU'LL WALK AWAY WITH

Outcomes, not lecture notes.

01

Set up and navigate Cursor and Claude Code for AI-assisted application development

02

Break down an app idea into clear, buildable components that AI tools can execute effectively

03

Write precise prompts and instructions that guide AI to generate the code you actually want

04

Understand enough about your codebase to read, test, and troubleshoot what AI builds

05

Fix errors and iterate on your app using AI assistance without getting stuck or starting over

06

Deploy a working application to a live URL that you can share with anyone

07

Develop the mental model of a builder: scope → build → test → ship → improve

Lloyd

Lloyd is an AI-native entrepreneur who specializes in automating businesses and processes with agentic workflows. His tech career started as "The YouTube Ads Guy," and when the early releases of ChatGPT and other LLMs emerged he saw AI as the most transformative technology of our lifetimes - and set about learning everything he could about it. Nowadays he's happy to check in between classes on the AI agents running his businesses while he shows Varsity Tutors students how they can do the same.

ABOUT THIS CLASS

Building a real app used to require months of coding before you could make anything worth showing anyone. That's no longer true — and Vibecoding Essentials is the class that proves it. Using Cursor and Claude Code, two of the most powerful AI development tools available, high school students learn to go from idea to working application without writing code from scratch. You'll learn how to describe what you want, guide AI tools through the build, test and fix what doesn't work, and deploy something you can actually share. This is the class where "I could make an app" stops being a someday thought and becomes something you actually do.

SYLLABUS

The New Way to Build: Describe It, Guide It, Ship It

Vibecoding is what happens when AI tools are good enough to write most of the code — and builders (experienced or not) focus on guiding, directing, and refining rather than typing syntax line by line. It's not a shortcut to real development; it's a genuinely new way of building that's reshaping the software industry. And it means high school students can now build real apps with real functionality in a single course, without years of programming experience as a prerequisite.

Cursor and Claude Code: Your AI Development Team

Cursor is an AI-powered code editor that understands your entire project and can generate, edit, and explain code based on plain-language instructions. Claude Code is Anthropic's coding AI, built for the kind of extended, complex development tasks that earlier AI tools couldn't handle. Together, they give students access to a development workflow that professional developers are increasingly adopting. This course teaches students how to use both tools together effectively — how to prompt them, how to guide them through multi-step builds, and how to verify and improve what they produce.

From Idea to Working App

The course follows a real development arc: students define what they want to build, break it down into manageable pieces, use AI tools to execute each piece, and connect them into a working application. Along the way, students learn the core concepts that make them effective builders even without writing code themselves: how apps are structured, what a database does, how a frontend communicates with a backend, and how to read error messages well enough to diagnose what went wrong.

Shipping Something Real

The course doesn't end with a prototype or a screenshot — it ends with a deployed application at a live URL that students can show anyone. The act of shipping something real, seeing it work in a browser, and sharing it with friends and family is the point: it changes a student's relationship to technology from consumer to creator. Vibecoding Essentials is the class where that shift happens.
