Meet Shannon.

Shannon
A graduate of Princeton University and the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School, Shannon Julian is a veteran instructor–and 99th-percentile scorer–across a variety of standardized tests. Applying her background in strategy and her polished communication skills, she guides students through the most challenging of tests and imparts wisdom on what it takes to earn admission to the world's most selective schools. When she's not deconstructing tests or consulting on corporate strategy, she is also a competitive ballroom dancer and avid traveler.
The SSAT Upper Level Prep Class is built for students who are serious about earning a spot at a top independent or boarding school — and who know that a strong SSAT score is a key part of making that happen. Over the course of this class, students work through every section of the Upper Level SSAT — Verbal, Quantitative, and Reading — learning not just the content but the specific strategies that help you work faster, avoid traps, and maximize your score. From cracking analogy patterns and expanding vocabulary in context to applying tactical math moves on tricky quantitative problems, every session delivers skills you can use immediately. Whether you're approaching the SSAT for the first time or looking to push your score into a higher percentile, this course gives you the structure, practice, and confidence to walk into test day at your best.
Know the Test. Own the Score.
The SSAT Upper Level isn't just a hard test — it's a specific test, and that distinction matters. Every section has its own logic, its own traps, and its own patterns. This course is built around the idea that the students who score highest aren't just smart — they're prepared. They know what's coming, they have a strategy for each question type, and they've practiced enough to execute under pressure. That's exactly what this class delivers: a section-by-section system for turning preparation into performance.
Verbal: Vocabulary, Analogies, and Strategic Thinking
The Verbal section is where many students feel the most uncertain — and with good reason. Between synonym questions that test the edges of your vocabulary and analogy questions that demand precise relational thinking, this section rewards students who go beyond memorizing word lists. In this course, students learn to decode analogy structures by identifying the exact relationship between word pairs — not guessing by feel, but applying a repeatable process. On synonym questions, students develop strategies for working through unfamiliar words using roots, context, and elimination so that even imperfect vocabulary knowledge translates into smart, defensible answer choices.
Quantitative: Math Skills Meets Test Strategy
The SSAT Upper Level Quantitative sections test a wide range of math — from number concepts and algebra to geometry and data interpretation — but they also reward students who understand how the questions are constructed. This course covers the core content students need while layering in tactical moves: how to spot the fastest path to an answer, when to work backward from the answer choices, and how to avoid the computational traps built into the hardest problems. Students practice both Quantitative sections with an eye toward efficiency, building the fluency to move quickly without sacrificing accuracy.
Reading: Speed, Comprehension, and Evidence
The Reading section gives students dense passages across a range of subjects — humanities, science, and narrative fiction — and then asks them to locate specific evidence, draw inferences, and identify an author's purpose, all on a tight clock. Students in this course learn active reading strategies that prioritize structure and purpose over passive re-reading: how to map a passage quickly, where to look for answers to different question types, and how to evaluate answer choices against the text rather than memory or instinct. The goal is reading smarter, not slower.
Test Strategy and Confidence for Test Day
Beyond content, this course addresses the full picture of what it takes to perform on test day — including the SSAT's wrong-answer penalty, which changes the calculus on guessing. Students learn a clear framework for when to attempt a question, when to skip strategically, and how to manage their time across sections so they're never caught scrambling at the end. By the time students finish this course, they won't just know the material — they'll have a game plan they trust and the practice reps to back it up.
