AI isn't just for generating answers — used well, it's one of the best writing coaches available. In this course, middle school students learn to use AI tools like ChatGPT to actually improve their own writing rather than replace it: brainstorming ideas, strengthening structure, fixing clarity issues, and getting genuinely useful feedback. Crucially, students also learn to tell the difference between helpful AI feedback and the vague, over-polite responses AI tools give when you don't push them hard enough. The result is stronger writers who know how to use AI as a tool — not writers who've outsourced their thinking.

AI as Writing Coach — If You Know How to Use It

Most students who use AI for writing fall into one of two traps: they ask it to write something for them (which doesn't help them get better) or they ask it for feedback and get back something like "Great work! Your writing is very clear and engaging!" (which also doesn't help them get better). This course teaches a third way — using AI as a genuine, push-back-giving, draft-improving writing coach that makes your work better rather than replacing it.

From Blank Page to Draft

The first skill students develop is using AI for pre-writing. Brainstorming, generating angles, exploring what you actually want to argue before you commit to a structure — these are the parts of writing that feel hardest when you're staring at an empty document, and AI tools can make them dramatically more productive. Students learn to use AI conversation as a thinking tool: not to get an answer, but to figure out what they think.

Getting Feedback That's Actually Useful

Generic AI feedback helps no one. Students learn how to prompt AI to be specific: ask it to identify the weakest paragraph, explain why a particular sentence is confusing, suggest three alternative ways to open, or find the place where your argument loses the reader. This kind of targeted prompting requires students to develop a clear, articulate sense of what they're trying to accomplish with their writing — which is itself a valuable skill.

Keeping Your Voice

There's a real tension between using AI to improve your writing and letting AI take over your voice. This course addresses it directly: students develop the editorial eye to evaluate AI suggestions critically, accepting the changes that strengthen their work and rejecting the ones that make it sound like everyone else. The goal throughout is a student who writes better because they used AI thoughtfully — not a student whose writing is indistinguishable from AI output.
