WHAT YOU'LL WALK AWAY WITH

Outcomes, not lecture notes.

01

Design Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) pipelines that extend LLMs with external, up-to-date knowledge sources

02

Use embeddings to represent and retrieve information in ways that make AI responses more context-aware and accurate

03

Build logic chains that link multiple AI reasoning steps into structured, multi-stage workflows

04

Connect language models to external tools and APIs so they can take real actions, not just generate text

05

Tailor AI systems to specific domains by incorporating specialized knowledge and task-appropriate constraints

06

Evaluate trade-offs in AI system design — including when a lightweight workflow outperforms a complex one

07

Architect scalable, reusable AI workflows that function as dynamic collaborators rather than one-off answer machines

Lloyd

Lloyd is an AI-native entrepreneur who specializes in automating businesses and processes with agentic workflows. His tech career started as "The YouTube Ads Guy," and when the early releases of ChatGPT and other LLMs emerged he saw AI as the most transformative technology of our lifetimes - and set about learning everything he could about it. Nowadays he's happy to check in between classes on the AI agents running his businesses while he shows Varsity Tutors students how they can do the same.

ABOUT THIS CLASS

If you can already get solid results out of ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini, this course is your next move. Beyond the Prompt is an intermediate-level AI class that shifts your thinking from 'how do I write a better prompt?' to 'how do I build a smarter system?' You'll dig into the real architecture behind advanced AI workflows — Retrieval-Augmented Generation, embeddings, tool use, and logic chaining — and learn how to connect language models to external knowledge, specific domains, and live APIs. This isn't theory for its own sake: every concept is grounded in structured demos, real-world use cases, and hands-on experimentation. By the end, you won't just be a power user — you'll be the kind of person who designs AI systems that actually do things. For students who are serious about technology, entrepreneurship, or just staying ahead of the curve, this course is the leap from user to builder.

SYLLABUS

From Prompt Tweaker to System Builder

Most students discover AI the same way: they find a tool, figure out how to get good answers out of it, and keep refining from there. That's a valuable skill — but it has a ceiling. Beyond the Prompt is designed for students who've already hit that ceiling and are ready to think bigger. This course reframes the entire question, moving from 'how do I phrase this better?' to 'how do I build something that reliably does what I need?' That shift — from prompt tweaking to architectural thinking — is exactly what separates casual AI users from the people who are actually building the next generation of AI-powered tools, workflows, and businesses.

The Core Technologies You'll Actually Understand

The course centers on four foundational concepts that power advanced AI systems in the real world. First, Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG): you'll learn how to give a language model access to external knowledge sources — documents, databases, live data — so it can answer questions it was never trained on. Second, embeddings: the mathematical representations that let AI systems measure meaning and similarity, enabling smarter search and context matching. Third, tool use: how to connect LLMs to APIs and external services so they can take real actions, not just produce text. And fourth, logic chaining: how to design multi-step reasoning workflows where each stage builds on the last, producing outputs that a single prompt never could. These aren't buzzwords — they're the building blocks of production AI systems, and you'll work with each of them directly.

How the Course Is Taught

Every concept in this course is introduced through structured demos that show you exactly how it works before you're asked to experiment with it yourself. Real-world examples ground abstract ideas in concrete applications — from domain-specific AI assistants to automated research pipelines to tool-connected agents that interact with live data. Guided experimentation gives you room to test, break, and rebuild, which is how genuine technical intuition actually develops. You won't just watch and take notes; you'll be making decisions about system design and seeing the results in real time.

What You'll Be Able to Build

By the end of this course, you'll have the skills to design AI workflows that are lightweight but genuinely powerful — systems that pull in external knowledge, reason across multiple steps, and connect to real tools to get things done. Whether you're thinking about a research assistant tailored to a specific subject, an AI tool for a passion project or side business, or just a deeper understanding of how the technology you use every day actually works under the hood, you'll leave with a concrete, working mental model and the hands-on experience to match.

Who This Course Is For

Beyond the Prompt is built for students who are already comfortable using AI tools and are hungry to go further. You don't need a computer science background or coding expertise — but you should come in with genuine curiosity about how these systems work and real motivation to build something with them. If you've ever wondered why an AI gave you a frustrating answer and thought 'I could design this better,' this course was made for you.
