Students learn to develop protagonists, antagonists, and supporting characters using archetypes as a foundation — then push beyond the archetype to create personalities that feel original and alive. On the world-building side, students learn how to establish time, place, and cultural context, and how to use sensory details — sight, sound, smell, taste, touch — to make settings feel real and immersive.

Plot, Conflict, and Tension

Students master the six-part plot structure — exposition, conflict, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution — and learn how each stage serves the story. Conflict is explored across three dimensions: internal (a character's inner struggle), external (forces in the world working against them), and interpersonal (friction between characters). Special attention goes to building tension — the art of creating suspense and anticipation that keeps readers hooked from scene to scene.

Dialogue, Voice, and Style
