A longitudinal study follows the same group of participants over an extended period, testing them repeatedly as they age. This approach eliminates cohort effects because only one cohort is studied, and it can reveal individual trajectories of change. However, longitudinal research is expensive and time-consuming, and it is susceptible to attrition (participants drop out over time, potentially biasing the remaining sample) and practice effects (participants improve on tests simply because they have taken them before).
The cross-sequential design, championed by K. Warner Schaie, combines both cross-sectional and longitudinal strategies. Researchers begin with multiple age cohorts (as in a cross-sectional study) and then follow each cohort over time (as in a longitudinal study). This hybrid approach allows scientists to disentangle age effects from cohort effects and from time-of-measurement effects, making it the most powerful—but also the most resource-intensive—developmental research design.
