How we form evaluative judgments about people, objects, and ideas—and why those judgments shift.
The scientific study of attitudes sits at the heart of social psychology, having provided the field with one of its most enduring research traditions. In the early twentieth century, psychologists recognized that understanding how individuals evaluate their social world—whether favorably or unfavorably—could illuminate phenomena ranging from consumer behavior to racial prejudice to political polarization. The construct of the attitude was so central that Gordon Allport famously declared it the most indispensable concept in social psychology. Over the next century, researchers developed increasingly sophisticated models to explain not only how attitudes form through experience, learning, and social influence, but also why some attitudes prove remarkably resistant to change while others shift in response to a single persuasive message.
Across this historical arc, a fundamental question persisted: If attitudes are learned evaluations that shape behavior, what determines whether a particular attitude is easily changed or deeply entrenched? Answering this question requires understanding the mechanisms through which attitudes form in the first place—through direct experience, classical and operant conditioning, observational learning, and cognitive processing—and then examining the conditions under which persuasion, dissonance, and social pressure can alter them.
An attitude is a relatively stable evaluation of a person, group, object, or idea along a favorable-to-unfavorable dimension. Psychologists traditionally decompose attitudes into three interrelated components—often called the ABC model: the Affective component (emotional reactions), the Behavioral component (actions or behavioral intentions), and the Cognitive component (beliefs and thoughts). These three components do not always align perfectly, and discrepancies among them can create the internal tension that drives attitude change.
The diagram above captures the tripartite structure at the core of attitude research. Notice that each component can carry an independent valence: a person might hold a negative emotional association with exercise ("I dread the gym") while simultaneously holding positive beliefs about its health benefits ("Exercise reduces cardiovascular risk"). When these components conflict, the resulting attitude is said to be ambivalent, and ambivalent attitudes tend to be weaker predictors of behavior and more susceptible to persuasion than univalent ones. The ABC model thus explains not only what attitudes are composed of, but also why certain attitudes are more vulnerable to change.
Leon Festinger's cognitive dissonance theory posits that when an individual holds two psychologically inconsistent cognitions—or when behavior contradicts an existing attitude—an aversive state of dissonance arises, motivating the person to reduce the inconsistency. Festinger and Carlsmith's classic 1959 experiment demonstrated this elegantly: participants who were paid only $1 to tell a waiting participant that a boring task was enjoyable subsequently reported finding the task more interesting than participants paid $20. The low-payment group had insufficient external justification for their lie, so they changed their attitude to align with their behavior—a phenomenon that cannot be explained by simple reinforcement. Dissonance reduction can take several forms: changing the attitude, changing the behavior, adding consonant cognitions to justify the inconsistency, or trivializing the importance of the discrepant elements.
Daryl Bem's self-perception theory offers a competing account of the same phenomena. Rather than experiencing an aversive motivational state, Bem argued, people simply infer their attitudes by observing their own behavior and the context in which it occurs—much as an outside observer would. If you notice that you voluntarily eat sushi every Friday, you conclude that you must like sushi. The key distinction is that self-perception theory applies most clearly when initial attitudes are weak or ambiguous, whereas cognitive dissonance theory better explains attitude change when a person acts in ways that clearly contradict a strong pre-existing attitude.
Petty and Cacioppo's Elaboration Likelihood Model (ELM) describes persuasion as occurring along a continuum defined by the degree to which a message recipient engages in thoughtful elaboration. The central route is activated when the recipient is both motivated and able to process the message carefully; attitude change produced through this route tends to be durable, resistant to counter-persuasion, and predictive of behavior. The peripheral route operates when motivation or ability is low, leading the recipient to rely on heuristic cues—source attractiveness, number of arguments, emotional appeals—rather than argument quality. Attitudes formed via the peripheral route are typically weaker and more transient.
Carl Hovland and the Yale Attitude Change Approach identified four categories of variables that systematically affect the likelihood of persuasion: the source (who delivers the message), the message (what is communicated), the channel (through what medium), and the audience (to whom). These four factors interact in complex ways—for instance, a highly credible source may be more persuasive when the audience is not highly motivated to scrutinize arguments, but source credibility matters less when motivation is high and the audience focuses on argument quality instead.
