Levers Movement And BiomechanicsQuestion 1 of 1

During gait analysis, the ankle joint demonstrates different mechanical behavior during stance versus swing phase. If the ankle dorsiflexors generate 45 N⋅m of torque during the swing phase when the angular velocity is 180°/s, and the same muscles generate 60 N⋅m during stance phase when angular velocity is 90°/s, what explains this biomechanical difference?

Increased antagonist muscle co-contraction during stance phase reduces net torque output
The force-velocity relationship shows muscles generate greater force at slower contraction velocities
Greater mechanical advantage of ankle lever system during stance phase increases torque output
Enhanced elastic energy return from tendons during stance phase increases muscle torque

Question 1

During gait analysis, the ankle joint demonstrates different mechanical behavior during stance versus swing phase. If the ankle dorsiflexors generate 45 N⋅m of torque during the swing phase when the angular velocity is 180°/s, and the same muscles generate 60 N⋅m during stance phase when angular velocity is 90°/s, what explains this biomechanical difference?

  1. Increased antagonist muscle co-contraction during stance phase reduces net torque output
  2. The force-velocity relationship shows muscles generate greater force at slower contraction velocities (correct answer)
  3. Greater mechanical advantage of ankle lever system during stance phase increases torque output
  4. Enhanced elastic energy return from tendons during stance phase increases muscle torque
Explanation: The force-velocity relationship of skeletal muscle demonstrates that muscles can generate greater force (and therefore torque) at slower contraction velocities. During stance phase, the lower angular velocity (90°/s vs 180°/s) allows for greater force production, resulting in higher torque output (60 N⋅m vs 45 N⋅m). This is a fundamental property of muscle physiology. Choice A doesn't explain the torque difference between phases. Choice C incorrectly attributes the difference to mechanical advantage changes. Choice D incorrectly focuses on elastic energy when the question concerns active muscle contraction.
