Identify and distinguish fossil types — including permineralization, molds, casts, and trace fossils — and explain how each forms
Navigate the geologic timeline from the Precambrian through the Quaternary and place major prehistoric events within it
Classify dinosaurs into Ornithischian and Saurischian groups and describe the distinguishing features of iconic species like T. rex, Triceratops, and Stegosaurus
Describe the tools and excavation techniques paleontologists use in the field, from geological hammers and chisels to grid mapping
Analyze the evolutionary connections between extinct creatures and modern animals, including Ice Age megafauna like the saber-toothed cat and woolly mammoth
Examine real fossil specimens, including Megalodon teeth, and use physical evidence to draw conclusions about ancient environments
Create hands-on fossil replicas using clay or Play-Doh, applying knowledge of fossilization processes to the activity

Amalia Fernand is an environmental educator and world explorer who makes classes come alive with stories from her real-life adventures, props from her science shelf, and live program animals. The founder of Nature Explorers International, she has developed dozens of nature camps and classroom programs to inspire students to explore the world around them, appreciate wildlife, and become stewards of the environment. During classes, she is regularly joined by her friends Scaly the corn snake, Slimy the tiger salamander, and Lizzie the leopard gecko.
Junior Paleontologists Camp is a hands-on science adventure that transforms curious young learners into fossil detectives, ready to dig into Earth's 4-billion-year history. Students will master the science behind fossil formation, navigate the geologic timeline from the Precambrian to the Quaternary, and classify real dinosaur groups the same way professional paleontologists do. Along the way, they'll encounter legendary creatures — Megalodon, Titanoboa, Supercroc, woolly mammoths, and pterosaurs — and investigate how ancient life connects to the animals alive today. Every session blends visual exploration with genuine hands-on projects, including crafting their own fossil replicas and examining real Megalodon tooth specimens. If your student has ever been fascinated by dinosaurs or prehistoric life, this camp gives that curiosity a real scientific foundation.
