The Charlotte School System

Charlotte, North Carolina, is the most populous city in the state, boasting almost 860,000 residents. The greater metropolitan area has a population of about 2.6 million and is regarded as the fastest growing metro area in the nation. The majority of the city’s estimated 148,000 students attend the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools (CMS) district, which supervises more than 160 public schools.

Varsity Tutors can help your child from the first day of kindergarten all the way through college graduation. It’s vital that students receive the academic support they need to reach their learning potential at all stages of their learning journey.

If you’re curious how well the schools in your area are preparing their students, take a look at the table below.

Charlotte Test Scores

Students throughout the nation face similar exams such as the SAT and ACT as they approach the end of their high school careers. Students in Charlotte, however, must also prepare for various End of Grade (EOG) exams as early as third grade. These exams test students' mastery of the concepts they learned during the current school year and are given every year through eighth grade. Once students reach high school, they face a more extensive range of EOG exams, which can include math, biology, economics, algebra 1, English, civics and economics, chemistry, and others.

Private tutors can help your child prepare for any of the standardized exams they will face throughout their school years, but a professional tutor in Charlotte can do so much more! When your child meets a new concept that they can’t master, it can negatively impact their confidence. By working with a tutor, your child becomes more aware that all children have different learning styles, and this can help them grow more accepting of themselves when they struggle. This boost of confidence can be pivotal in helping a child learn to persevere even when faced with academic adversity

When you live in a large city such as Charlotte, it can be easy to assume that the sheer size of the educational system should ensure high-quality education. However, this is not always the case. Even the city’s most highly ranked schools don't stand out when compared to the rest of the state. The table below outlines how the best schools in the city compare to those in the rest of the state.

Tutoring review by Jeong Hwa Emily in Charlotte, NC
The student and I worked on a summer science writing assignment. We read through an assigned article, talked about the main points, and started writing the first portion of the assignment. She will continue to work on this assignment at our next session. She seemed very interested in the topic and eager to work on the assignment. She asked many questions and was very enthused to work on the assignment next week.

We reviewed, discussed, and made changes to the essay outline that the student had worked on. We talked about how to keep the essay within the word limit, readable, and understandable to its readers - as well as creative and compelling. Simplify and streamline. We discussed the first draft as well as some of the essays that he has written before, that I had the chance to read, as well as an online op/ed. He plans to write a first draft, which we will discuss tomorrow.

Today we reviewed the quadratic equations again. The student's class had not done well on the exam, so the teacher wanted to go over the material again. After reviewing the concepts, we focused on using the calculator to most efficiently solve the problems. This allowed her to more easily appreciate the symmetry inherent in the problems as well.

Tutoring review by Christopher in Charlotte, NC
The student is currently getting an 84 in the class. I made a set of flashcards where it would give her an Element symbol and she needed to type the name and number that corresponded to dividing the periodic table into 4 quadrants. The next thing we did was go back over her structure of an atom. We went back over how the number of protons defines the atom like a name or a person. Electrons dictate charge so a neutral atom has the same number of protons and electrons and ions (cations, +) have one less electron and (anions -) have one more electron. Isotopes differ in neutrons thus mass number. This is important because this is how we define reactivity. We went over valence electrons, shielding, nuclear charge and how those related to electronegativity and atomic radius. I think the first half stuck and the second half was a solid start.
