I am a graduate of the University of Texas at Austin, where I completed the UTeach Natural Sciences program to teach middle school math. I taught one year of 6th grade math and one year of 7th grade math, and the best parts about my job were building relationships with my students and watching their growth from the beginning to the end of the school year. I am back in school now at the University of Houston, but I want to be able to impact students' lives even if I cannot be a full-time teacher while I am taking classes. I firmly believe that education changes lives for the better, and I want to be a part of that change. With my teaching experience and background in human development and family sciences, I hope to be a successful tutor and to strengthen the understanding of the students I work with, not only about their content knowledge, but also about themselves and their value as a student.

I recently graduated from University of North Texas Health Science Center in Fort Worth with a M.S. in Medical Sciences. Prior to that I spent four years atop a hill at St. Edward's University earning a B.S. in Biology with a minor in Psychology. I started tutoring when I was a sophomore at St. Edward's. In my senior year I picked up another tutoring job working with an after school program that provided TAKS prep for middle and high school students. Through my education and experiences I've developed the ability to tutor a larger variety of subjects. During this time, I also discovered the importance of finding a student's learning style and tailoring all lessons to match their needs as well as include tips that will help students with their study skills and their time management. As a tutor it's important to me that I don't just try to help students through one class but teach them how to be successful independent learners through their whole academic career. After spending five years away from Houston, I like to spend my free time rediscovering all the exciting places that I forgot the city had to offer. However, I do miss Austin and look forward to any opportunity to go back and visit. When I'm not exploring cities I enjoy reading, going to see movies, trying to find new music, and keeping up with my friends. Oh and if it's Sunday I'm probably anxiously watching the Texans

To start, I am a mom and I love spending time with family and friends. I enjoy biking (bicycles), cooking new meals, scrap booking and going out to lunch or dinner with my friends. I also advocate for children who are not receiving the proper services in the school system. I am passionate about children receiving what they need to be successful from the school system. Academically, I have earned three master degrees over the years. One is in business and the other two are in the field of psychology; School Psychology and Educational Psychology. I have spent a number of years working in the public school system as a school psychologist. I thoroughly enjoy working with children to help them achieve a level of success with their academics. I like to use a multi-model approach to tutoring which includes your typical paper and pencil work, computer based learning tools, hands on strategies and discussion based learning. I believe for a student to remain engaged and active in their own learning they have to enjoy it to some degree. The teaching has to be interesting, engaging and have some level of fun tied to it. The teacher/tutor needs to know their student(s) and what their learning styles are in order to create the most effective strategies. I believe a reward system is very helpful for students who have a very low level of motivation to do their school work. It can be a very simple system which does not require spending lots of money, if any. I thoroughly enjoy working with children with special needs and various learning disabilities. My background is in the field of special education and I am well versed on a variety of interventions that prove successful with students. I have worked with students at all levels and have learned that a one's confidence level plays a large part in their success. When one feels confident about themselves and their ability to learn the material they seem to progress a bit quicker than those who struggle with self-confidence. I will help to build your child's self-confidence as they learn. It can be a fun experience and something your child looks forward to instead of dreading doing their school work. I look forward to working with you and your student(s).

I believe that all students can and want to learn. This is often admittedly unclear for many students throughout their academic careers. All it takes is one bad day, one bad teacher, or one confusing topic to make a student feel hopeless and that a certain subject is a lost cause.Tutoring is a great way to change a student's attitude towards a particular subject. I have always prided myself on getting to know the students in my class beyond their lives in the classroom in order to determine how they can learn to the best of their abilities. The one-on-one setting of tutoring offers an even better environment to develop a trusting relationship to take some frustration out of students' lives and give them more confidence in the classroom and in life in the process.

With nine years of experience tutoring in a variety of settings, I have had the pleasure of helping hundreds of students improve their grades and progress intellectually. Whether it was the Division I college football player who needed to improve his grade in a difficult statistics class in order to remain eligible to play, the high school junior trying to pass the AP Economics test to get ahead in college, or the class full of 8th graders who needed extra preparation for high school math, my emphasis on cooperative learning and dialogue has never failed to find a tutoring method to accommodate individual students' learning styles. My experiences include teaching a summer algebra class through UW-Milwaukee's Upward Bound Program, tutoring in Political Science, Economics, and Statistics for the University of Oklahoma Athletics Department, managing a team of nearly 40 volunteer tutors at Madison West High School's Schools of Hope program, and delivering review sessions to packed college lecture halls at the University of Oklahoma as an Undergraduate Teaching Fellow. I worked as a Master Tutor for the Milwaukee YMCA's Sponsor-A-Scholar program focusing on math and indepently developing and delivering a five week ACT prep course. I currently teach classroom SAT prep courses with a local Chicago organization. While I have expertise in a variety of subject areas, I take particular pleasure in demystifying college Economics and teaching math to those who are "just not math people." I believe that the best teachers spend more time asking questions and listening than they do talking. I am looking forward to meeting you at our first session.

As a tutor, my goal is to build my student's confidence by improving their study habits, critical thinking skills, and problem solving ability. This is achieved by a general assessment in the subject in question followed by analysis of such assessment. Following assessment, the student and I will work on the areas he or she is struggling in. Previous experience has taught me that no student learns exactly the same and I strive to find the strategy that works best for the individual. I have tutored numerous grades ranging from pre-k-college so I have a wide range of experience. I enjoy working with kids of all ages and my favorite subjects to teach are math, biology, and chemistry. As a current student, I know that sometimes certain topics can seem impossible, but working at it is the only way to improve. I hope to provide the best possible tutoring experience for the student and the teacher in an environment conducive to learning. I am currently a junior at Creighton University seeking a degree in management and hope to attend dental school in the future. Outside of school I like to spend time outdoors and enjoy surfing and hiking.

I am a graduate of the University of Texas, Austin. I received my Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education and Mathematics. Since graduating, I have spent 30 years in Texas Public School classrooms teaching grades one through sixth and eighth grade mathematics. Since retiring from classroom teaching, I have been a substitute teacher in a local district teaching children in Pre-K through middle school. I have also tutored privately for the same age groups. While I tutor a broad range of subjects, I am most passionate about mathematics, reading, and writing in the elementary school levels. Prepping students for the state testing has always been important and my students have shown great proficiency with the tests after prep. Over the years, I have found that instilling a love of learning fosters great success in mastery of their objectives. I believe that all children can obtain mastery when given learning experiences that fit their learning mode. Many learning experiences are offered to cover their material including hands-on activities, technology when available, as well as written lessons. When not working with children, I enjoy reading, sewing, walking, and creating crafts.
