Thirty years as a controller and CFO means Alan has done math under real financial pressure — budgets, cost analyses, forecasting models — where getting the numbers wrong has actual consequences. That applied experience gives him a practical vocabulary for explaining concepts like ratios, percentages, and algebraic problem-solving in terms students can connect to something concrete. He holds a 4.9 rating from clients.

A dual math and physics degree means Maxwell has taught everything from basic fraction operations to multivariable calculus and differential equations. Whatever level a student is at — struggling with long division or wrestling with integration by parts — he builds each lesson around why a method works, which makes the next topic easier to pick up instead of feeling like a disconnected new rule.
From fraction operations in fifth grade to limits in early calculus, Jane's 6–12 math certification means she understands how each concept scaffolds onto the last. She's especially skilled at identifying the specific gap — maybe it's integer rules, maybe it's order of operations — that's quietly causing trouble three grade levels later.
Linguistics trains you to see systems — how rules interact, how patterns nest inside patterns — and Alyssa applies that same structural thinking to math, breaking a problem into its component parts the way she'd diagram a complex sentence. Her 32 ACT and experience tutoring across subjects from algebra through calculus mean the content is solid, even if her real passion lives in the language side of her degree. She's a good fit for students who think in words first and numbers second.
Engineering training means solving math problems daily under real constraints — calculating flow rates, modeling decay curves, optimizing reactor designs. Kevin brings that applied mindset to tutoring, connecting arithmetic, fractions, ratios, and algebraic thinking to concrete scenarios so the logic behind each operation clicks.
Balancing a neuroscience and chemistry curriculum at Emory means Maria uses math daily — from algebraic manipulation in stoichiometry to the quantitative reasoning behind statistical models. She tackles foundational skills like fractions, proportions, and equation-solving by connecting them to real problems so the logic behind each step is clear, not just the procedure.
I am an interdisciplinary educator with an Ed.M. from the Harvard Graduate School of Education and a B.A. from Dartmouth College. My background is primarily in integrated arts learning and museum education and I specialize in visual arts, history and art history, and object-based learning. In all subjects, I take a creative, inquiry-based and learner-centered approach, designing opportunities for each unique individual to meet their learning goals.
I'm not tutoring or buried in my textbooks, you will either find me rock climbing at the Triangle Rock Club, playing Ultimate Frisbee, working on my car, or enjoying the great outdoors (beaches, mountains, forests--you name it, I love it). On rainy weekends I enjoy tinkering with computers and old electronics, playing Pokemon, or picking at my guitar.
I am a recent graduate from a masters program in biostatistics at Columbia University. I received my Bachelor of Arts in biological sciences, with a focus in neurobiology at Northwestern University. In August, I will be starting a doctoral program in biostatistics at NYU. I was a teaching assistant at Columbia University in my department and also have tutored graduate students and undergraduates privately as well. My primary areas of tutoring are math and statistics coursework in addition to math sections on standardized tests such as the GRE and GMAT. I am very passionate about helping students feel more confident and excited about math. In my spare time, I enjoy running, playing piano, and spending time with friends and family.
I am a graduate of Wesleyan University, where I received my Bachelor of Arts in Sociology with High Honors. With eight years of experience working in education, I've tutored students in math, science, history, and English, as well as helped students prepare for standardized tests. I've guided adults towards passing the US Citizenship Exam and taught English in India, where I lived for six months. Whenever I work with a student I personalize the lessons to fit their particular learning style, since I know every student is unique and having the right fit can make all the difference in making learning fun and effective. My strengths are tutoring the social sciences and humanities, as well as making math and standardized tests approachable to students that normally don't like those subjects. In my spare time I like traveling, spending time in the outdoors (climbing & backpacking), meditation, and playing soccer. Next fall I will be beginning my PhD in Education at Harvard University.
I am a rising sophomore at Harvard College and am about to declare as a Mechanical Engineering concentrator, working towards a Bachelor of Science degree. I've always enjoyed sharing my knowledge with my peers and those around me and have done so in both formal and informal settings. I've been a tutor for both Math and Spanish programs in high school and enjoyed the strides I made with students. I am willing to tutor any subject I have a background in, but am strong in mathematics, the sciences, Spanish, history, writing, and ACT prep. I enjoy teaching mathematics most due to the joy I can see in children once they master a topic and can answer even pointed questions meant to stump them, and maybe even put their knowledge to real world use. As a tutor, I like to give a strong foundation to orient my student, and then gradually grant them more freedom and independence until they can feel themselves grasp the concept, pointing out pitfalls or common errors along the way; teachers who used these methods on me always left the most lasting impressions. Outside of my studies, I really enjoy listening to music, both old favorites and new interests, reading classics, and gaming/playing basketball with my friends.
I am proud to be a part of Varsity Tutors! I am originally from San Antonio, TX; I completed my undergraduate education at Rice University in Houston where I received a bachelor's degree in Biochemistry and Cell Biology. Currently, I am in my second year of medical school at Baylor College of Medicine.

Frequently Asked Questions
The first session is all about understanding where your student is starting from. A tutor will assess their current math level, identify specific challenges (whether it's word problems, multi-step equations, or conceptual gaps), and learn about their learning style. This helps create a personalized plan that builds confidence and targets the exact skills they need to improve.
Many students can follow steps but don't understand *why* those steps work—that's where personalized instruction makes a difference. Tutors help students see the patterns and connections behind the math, so they truly understand concepts rather than just memorizing formulas. This deeper understanding makes it easier to tackle new problems and builds real confidence in their math abilities.
Word problems are one of the most common challenges in math because they require both reading comprehension and problem-solving skills. Tutors work with students to break down problems step-by-step, identify what information matters, and develop strategies for translating words into equations. With practice and clear guidance, students learn to approach word problems systematically instead of feeling overwhelmed.
Math anxiety often comes from gaps in understanding or past negative experiences. One-on-one instruction creates a judgment-free space where students can ask questions, make mistakes, and learn without pressure. As students see themselves understanding concepts and solving problems correctly, their confidence grows naturally—and that confidence reduces anxiety over time.
Yes. Tutors in Akron work with students across the 21 school districts in the area and are familiar with different textbooks and teaching approaches. During the first session, the tutor learns exactly what curriculum your student is using and aligns their instruction to match what's being taught in class, so tutoring reinforces and deepens what students are already learning.
Showing work isn't just about getting the right answer—it's about developing clear problem-solving strategies and being able to explain your thinking. Tutors help students organize their work, use proper notation, and explain each step logically. This skill is essential not only for better grades but for building the mathematical reasoning that helps with harder topics later.
Absolutely. Topics like proofs and graphing require both conceptual understanding and technical skill—areas where personalized instruction really shines. Tutors break down the logic behind proofs and help students visualize how graphs represent equations and relationships. With guided practice, students move from confusion to competence in these more abstract areas of math.
Varsity Tutors connects students with tutors who have strong backgrounds in mathematics—whether through advanced degrees, teaching experience, or demonstrated expertise in the subject. Each tutor is vetted and matched based on their ability to teach your student's specific level and needs, from elementary math through calculus and beyond.
