The student and I met for our session this morning, and we have our work cut out for us. I have laid out a comprehensive plan to attack his issues. The student has been given access to a test-taking structure and is working on studying that now. I will also engage him in drills on vocabulary and mathematical formulae in order to shore up these areas. I believe this combination of lesson plans will have the best chance of improving the student's performance on his next exam.

We started off with a few quick check problems, to see how the student handled percentages--he was a natural so, we won't have to cover those in depth. During this session, we worked on symbolism and logic problems. A highly abstract, math concept that appears on standardized tests. He struggled a bit--it's pretty hard to make math so abstract!--but he worked really hard and practiced on every problem. By the end he felt more confident but, we're definitely going to continue working on it in future sessions. We also reviewed number properties and, some basic ways to describe data (mean, median, mode), which he was clearly very familiar with. We did a brief introduction to reading comprehension, which we'll cover more in a later session.

The student and I reviewed a practice quantitative section. She was able to finish all but five in the time allotted, and there were only two that she was unsure about how to start. We discussed looking for important details in problems and making sure to check answers. If you get a test with an unscored section, it will not be identified and can be mixed in anywhere after the Analytical Writing section on the GRE. If you end up facing the research section, it is at the end of the exam and will be identified. The Analytical Writing section is a 30-minute assessment that requires you to complete two separate tasks. Both Verbal Reasoning sections consists of 20 questions, and you will have 30 minutes to complete each. The two Quantitative Reasoning sections are 35-minute evaluations that contain 20 questions each. The Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning sections are computer-adaptive.
