How can a Reading tutor help you?

Even in the age of YouTube videos and Netflix, reading remains one of our best ways of gathering information. Books, articles, recipes, advertisements, lists, and plaques at the museum are ways most adults naturally absorb a huge portion of their knowledge of the world. If your student is losing enthusiasm for reading because of struggles in class, you could help them rekindle their passion. Let the educational directors at Varsity Tutors help you find a tutor in Youngstown who can guide your student as they work to understand their reading course.

Reading is a crucial skill for success in school. It's measured on almost every major standardized test, from the Ohio State tests to the SAT and ACT. To prepare for excellence in class and on the tests, your student might benefit from personalized attention. Learning in the classroom can never reach the level of detail and specification that tutoring one-on-one can. Each of the independent reading tutors that we could help you find in Youngstown, OH, is an experienced professional. Your tutor can try to help your student by finding topics that they enjoy reading about, and using an approach that suits their style. Reading confidently and for enjoyment is a matter of practice and encouragement from a variety of sources. A tutor can act as an outside expert without the pressure of school or the oft-ignored advice of parents. A tutor can bridge the gap between practice, confidence, and potential that is at the heart of many student's challenges in reading.

The student and I worked on completing her spelling and reading assignments. She wrote her weekly spelling list three times each, while I dictated them to her in sentence. This week, we used her challenge spelling words. We also co-wrote a paragraph using three challenge spelling words and two basic words. We reviewed her high-frequency words and enrichment words. Lastly, she notified me about a holiday project that she had to do. She was to complete a project on a holiday symbol and write a supporting paragraph. She selected a holiday symbol, and we researched it on the Internet. She then wrote a paragraph describing the purpose of the symbol.

The student chose to begin with math. We worked on multi-step problems. He utilized the strategies of circling information and underlining the question, with minimal prompting. He completed the computations easily. Next, we practiced the 4 and 5 multiplication tables. After that, he developed his own multi-step problem using Christmas ideas. He was very agreeable to help while writing. We ended the session working on reading and answering comprehension questions. He needed one reminder to use the text for evidence. He also wrote the answer to two questions in complete sentences. We discussed the spelling of words throughout the session, as I am trying to get him to not only rely on phonics when spelling or decoding words.

In today's session, I helped the student with her spelling homework. She needed a little explanation about what a syllable is and how to divide words into their syllables. I gave her 3 guide rules for doing this. After her homework, we played the Memory game using index cards that had her spelling words on them. Each time one of us matched the cards, she spelled the word on the card. When a match was not made, she used each word in a sentence. The last 10 minutes were spent practicing reading.
