How can a tutor help your child master the ISEE?

The Independent School Entrance Examination (ISEE) tests your child's verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, reading comprehension, and math skills. Their ability to write is examined in the essay section. This exam takes three hours to complete for the Middle and Upper Level test takers. It challenges your student's knowledge and endurance and serves to show competitive elementary, middle, and high school administrators that your child is among the most qualified individuals. Adequate preparation is critical. You want your son or daughter to be able to accurately demonstrate the things they know. Don't let challenging topics or your student's low confidence hold them back. An expert ISEE tutor in Youngstown, OH, can help meet all of your child's studying goals.

A lack of confidence and familiarity with the test format affects the scores of many students. We will find your student a hand-picked ISEE tutor in Youngstown, who is passionate about teaching, which allows them to make your child's study sessions engaging. The tutor has taken the exam before and done well. This qualifies them to train for the test in a way that matches your student's learning style. Your student's strengths and weaknesses will be identified, so that they can be for targeted during customized study sessions. The tutor will keep track of your child's progress with practice tests and other relevant exercises, and can even switch instructional styles in order to fine tune the study plan.

In preparation for the student's assessment the concepts covered today include rewriting expressions, completing the square, factoring, line of best fit, and how to properly answer extended response questions. The student struggled the most with rewriting expressions and completing the square. Even though the student had a few missteps, the mess ups were minor and this is why we were able to cover so much in review. The key strategy was understanding the proper way of answering extended response questions. I broke down numerically how many correct multiple choice and free response points are necessary to pass. For any extra practice the student has a prepbook filled with problems.

The student found one practice test in the SAT guidebook to be particularly challenging (which, admittedly, it was.) We continued reviewing advanced math topics and discussing the construction of standardized reading and writing questions. He will certainly do well on his test today. The student is a lovely person and an excellent thinker, and I wish him all the best in the college application process and beyond.

The student seems ready to take the ACT. We have one more session together, the night before the exam, and I think that will be sufficient. She did an excellent job on three science passages tonight, with 14/15 correct. We also practiced two reading passages in a row, and she recognized where she could have saved herself some time. Yet even with time pressure, she got a decent amount correct. On Friday, we will do a strategy overview so she's not too stressed so close to the test.

The student and I went over what she had done in the book since last time (most of test 4) and then did some extra reading, English, and math practice. She seems much more comfortable with the English and math sections.

This session we focused primarily on grammar and sentence structure. Some of the main things we focused on very active vs passive voice, subjects and predicates, and use of adjectives and adverbs. We also covered some punctuation questions the student had, such as the difference between its and it's, and distinguishing between there, their, and they're. I plan to assign a few short quizzes on punctuation, and a longer quiz based on the results of a diagnostic exam taken prior to this session. I also plan to email the student a guide on subject-predicate-object sentence structure.
