Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I went over the first assignment on her Elevens lab, and then she started working through the second assignment. We are working a lot with classes, methods, and arrays. Tomorrow, we will continue going over the second assignment."
"The student and I went over his study guide as well as practice questions pertaining to object inheritance. He did very well overall on these questions, scoring in the B+ to A- range. Overall, I am happy with his performance this evening."
"During this session, the student and I completed his assignment dealing with two dimensional arrays. The last part dealt with sorting the array. He was able to come up with the idea of placing the items inside a one dimensional array, sorting it (since it is easier) and then placing them back in the two dimensional array. It was somewhat time consuming because we had to deal with some null pointer exceptions; however, he grasped the concepts pretty well. In the end, some graphic adjustments needed to be made to create a chart with the required information. Overall, this was a good session."
"We covered recursion, AP style grading, sorting, searching, do loops, mutator functions, and static concept. The student seems to have a very strong handle on the course; she just wants to be prepared moving forward for the exam and other courses. She mentioned her interest in AI so I gave her some strategies to help prepare for that style of coding (procedural style). When I explained the AP grading scale, I think it took some pressure off and highlighted areas where she could basically guarantee free points on the exam. Moving forward, I want to focus on solving free-response questions and really understanding what the graders want, to ensure time won't be an issue on the exam."
"We went over the assignments the student practiced on last time, and also went over an IDE that he had downloaded but didn't know how to use. He has a good understanding of how to use it now. He is doing especially well and answers everything I quiz him on with ease. We went over the nuances of Java and he answered about 30 quiz questions related to the AP exam. He is doing an exceptional job and at this point I really don't have any doubt that he can pass the exam, pending any lab assignments. I'll be preparing more practice questions over the week."
"This session was devoted mostly to discussions of sorting and searching, especially questions pertaining to insertion and selection sorts / binary searching. Also, we had some discussion of inheritance (related to a test question) and to general big-O notation calculation. The student is very bright and clearly understands her material well."
