"We covered the meaning of Hess's law. The student previously completed the calculations for a lab using the principle of Hess's law. She needed help putting those calculations into context so that she could do a short write-up in her lab notebook. Since she has to write in pen in her notebook, I recommended that she write out the difficult sentences on a separate sheet of paper first so that she could adjust them as necessary without the fear of making mistakes. By the end, she grasped the concept of Hess's law and understood why the experiment was done. We also did a few problems determining enthalpy with bond energies."
"Great work tonight! We reviewed some pretty tricky material, especially the properties of solutions, such as molarity. I told the student that it can be very helpful to write out your units in full each time you are given a quantity (1.25 mol NaCl/L solution instead of 1.25 M NaCl). We also discussed types of solutions (acid, base, alcohol, etc.) and how to distinguish between them. OH(-) is hydroxide and is paired with cations with a positive charge to make a strong acid. Alternatively OH(no charge) is a hydroxyl group and is paired with organic compounds containing carbon and hydrogen to create an alcohol. It's a small distinction but the student did an excellent job discerning between the two! I recommended that the student review Unit 7 before our next session."
