Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student read a story about a boy that raised money to dig wells for people in Africa. He wrote a composition about the boy. He also completed several sections of grammar. We reviewed his math homework. He also read from the book "Captains Courageous.""
"Today was a really good session with the student! We finished up proportions and ratios, although I do believe that that should be a refresher at a later date to make sure he is completely comfortable. We spent the second half of the session on discounts, and he seemed to do much better and understand them easily. From discounts, we moved on to sales tax and tipping, which was also the subject of his homework. I feel confident that he's going to be able to fly through this part of the material, and we should be able to finish it up next time and move on to surface area!"
"Today was our first session. We got to know each other a little bit. She was very quiet. Mom expressed that her weaknesses in math are fractions and multi-step word problems. We started just doing some basic addition and subtraction problems. She was able to complete them with ease, but did use her fingers for a few problems. We also spent some time doing division problems. She did well with but needed some help when the numbers got a little larger. We ended with word problems. She was able to complete the one-step word problems with no issues. The multi-step word problems with fractions are where the student struggled the most. We will continue to work on that next time."
"Today we continued to work on reducing fractions. In so doing, it became clear that the student could use some practice with basic division. We worked on basic division and will continue to review in the sessions to come."
"Today we continued working on fraction concepts, specifically pertaining to simplifying fractions, and word problems related to simplifying fractions. With reading, we continued to work with reading comprehension, and dictionary/research skills. He has finished the end of one of his Goosebumps novels, and is starting another one. I am using this as an opportunity to work on reading comprehension, summarizing skills, plot, etc. related to reading Fiction."
"Today we covered a wide variety of math problems. She struggled the most with adding and subtracting negatives but seemed to be understanding the rules and steps. She had a good attitude and did not get frustrated. I wrote out steps for her and we did many practice problems and used visuals. She has more math to work on this week."
