Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today we covered activation energy in chemical reactions. She needed help to understand specific applications of formula/equation and using them to solve problems. She was interested to learn and practice more on subject questions."
"The student worked on his solutions assignment in the beginning of the session. The homework required him to use the dilutions formula: M1V1 = M2V2 which he was able to manipulate and use easily. He also reported that he had received 85 on his recent quiz in solubility and I went over the quiz with him for any questions he had. We also got started on his test prep today. The student completed the first two parts in no time and with pretty good accuracy. We will continue to prepare for the exam."
"We covered concentrations and introduced the electromagnetic spectrum. He hadn't had much practice with light, he only learned two equations and some of the important introductory concepts, so I explained a bunch of the nuances of the electromagnetic spectrum that he may or may not go over in the coming weeks. He was curious about a lot of the material since he had not learned it before, but it covers areas that most people hear about but don't know a lot so he had lots of questions."
"During this session, the student brought materials from past labs to review for his final. In particular, he wanted to review the diprotic acid titration and rate law lab calculations. For the titration lab, he was uncertain about how to incorporate stoichiometry into his calculations. I created several practice problems for him, and he was able to identify why, in some cases (monoprotic titrations), we do not need to write out the stoichiometric step when converting and why in other cases (diprotic) we do. With the rate law calculations, he was uncomfortable with how to interpret graphs as 0th, 1st, or 2nd order. We reviewed the graphs and he seemed more confident with the information. He also was initially shaky on the calculations to determine rate order from experimental data; however, after completing additional practice he seemed more confident with the strategies."
"This session went well. The student didn't prepare a lot for today, so we had to review redox chemistry. While last week was a deep dive into a lot of subjects, that refresher course helped build him up to understand the redox topics this week. Over the week, he will complete the questions at the end of the chapter and we will review redox concepts briefly at the beginning of the next session. After that, we will carry on through the book."
"The student and I talked about the different phases of a chemical and the heat absorbed/released, and we did some calculations concerning heat energy. We were able to find some quizzes to answer to help study for her upcoming test on this chapter. I feel confident she understands the subject and will do well on her test."
