Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today we reviewed Lewis structures and learned VSEPR theory for determining 3-d structures. For the Lewis structures, I had the student write out the steps, in his own words, for completing the structures. I had him read the textbook for VSEPR theory. Then he worked on his homework, a five page worksheet covering VSEPR theory. As with previous weeks, he is gradually building on his knowledge and needs repetition and review to solidify his understanding. He improved greatly on his last lab, receiving an 88. I helped him review this lab and now have a better understanding of his teacher's expectations."
"Today, the student and I focused on Chemistry. She brought her last chemistry exam and we reviewed problems that she lost points on. She made very minor mistakes and overall got a 90% on the exam, which she was very happy with. She has another chemistry exam in two weeks, so we began reviewing the material for that exam. She brought a practice exam, and we worked through problems together. We covered rate laws, equilibrium constants, and energy diagrams. She did well with the problems and began to understand the fundamental concepts well."
"The student and I went over his Quiz 3_4. We worked on determining the translational and rotational velocities and accelerations at different points in a rotating system or in a series of links. He had a very strong understanding of the material and had good approaches to the problem. We mainly focused on the 3rd and 4th problems. His challenges were due to the wording of the problems, and understanding how different points were affected in a system. I showed him several different ways to solve, approach, and think about the problems. At the end of the session, he appeared to be more confident in his approach and understanding."
"The student and I met to review some information before her test on Thursday. We reviewed information, including a PowerPoint on the structure and function of the cell membrane and a PowerPoint on the types of biological macromolecules. After that, we had some extra time, so we were able to quickly review her PowerPoint on microorganisms (which we did not cover together)."
"Tonight, we went over the student's evolution homework, and she did the chapter review in preparation for her upcoming test on Tuesday. We discussed natural selection, allelic frequencies, and population genetics. We then used the learning tools website and reviewed all of its evolution questions so that she could get some more variety."
"We finished the topic of active transport from last time and began to go over cellular respiration. This will likely take multiple sessions because of the nature of the subject, but we successfully covered glycolysis today. I plan on going into the Krebs cycle and the electron transport chain next week, and will also be making a review "test" for us to work on."
