Session Summaries by Calculus Tutors

Yonkers, NY Calculus tutoring
This was split into 2 sessions-- one on Friday and one on Monday. We decided it would be best to do it this way so that the student could get some studying done immediately before he took his final. On Friday we re-did his practice final and spent extra time on the tricky ones. On Monday we went over the practice final again to make sure he really understood the process to solve each problem. He did great on Friday, and even better on Monday, so I hope his final goes as well it seems it will! He was a great student, and I was very happy to help him and to be able to see him improve so much in just a few weeks.

The student and I started looking at numerous Practice Test Problems before her test on 12/17. The student, all by herself, solved a large number of problems. There were still quite a few problems where she needed my help. She and I solved majority of the easy problems and started looking at the difficult problems at the end. As we approached 8:00 pm, I thought we needed another session to solve these problems (quite challenging) without exceeding the 2:00 hour session. I left it up to her to contact me for the next session.

Today, we reviewed his assignments - graphing linear and absolute value inequalities. We then proceed to chapter 3 where he asked if we can go over solving equations with 3 or more variables. Next, we covered adding and subtracting matrices and he showed tendencies to make minor errors when subtracting negatives, often forgetting that subtracting negatives equates to adding the two numbers and instead subtracts them. We proceeded to multiplication of matrices and then gave him some assignments for the next session. We will cover determinants and the Cramer's rule in the next session.

We spent the majority of today's session on Related Rates. We worked through some problems in the book and made sure the concepts were solid in the student's head. He said it was very helpful to go through and see some concepts such as dr/dt = dV/dt * dr/dV, written out and see how they cancel out. We were able to finish one of his writing assignments that involved related rates with him leading the thought process. We also finished going over problems involving Newton's Law of Cooling and exponential growth functions. Next session, we will start with derivatives of logarithmic functions, which is what they are going through in class.
