Recent Yellow Springs Tutoring Session Notes

Tutoring review by Nikia in Yellow Springs, OH
Today the student and I reviewed the questions she had pertaining to solving quadratic equations and simplifying rational expressions. We also discussed picking up the pace with the skill builder assignments. As a result, this week she was assigned SB # 4 (odd problems) and # 5 (even problems). In a past session, she mentioned that she had been making small mistakes in regard to graphing linear equations. So, the second half of the session was dedicated to graphing linear equations using x-and y-intercepts as well as slope and y-intercept. We were able to go over this assignment and correct all of the mistakes. On the second assignment, she completed 4 similar problems without any issues. It is a pleasure to work with her as her attitude towards working is always positive and she is very proactive in asking questions about things she is unsure of.

The student and I went over her math and science sections before both of her tests that she had on Tuesday. We made sure she knew the details thoroughly and had memorized the equations by doing a lot of practice problems.

Tutoring review by Adam in Yellow Springs, OH
The student and I are in the final sessions before her EOC. We discussed in depth specific test strategies and how to know when to use them, eliminating obvious wrong answers being the most frequent. She and I implemented these strategies as we worked through a selection of assessment exam Algebra problems assigned to her in class. She had a few questions about some areas that date back to the premier of the course, and we revisited those concepts, including writing equations to represent scenarios, and determining functional linear relationships between two variables when given a set of points. She always shares her concerns with me. She does not hesitate to let me know when something stumps her, and always maintains determination to master all she is given.

Today we worked on the student's final exam review, covering primarily algebra concepts but also some upper level inequalities when we finished the review. She is a very strong algebra student. Her attitude was great as usual, and she was both focused and pleasant to work with. We talked about some strategies to keep signs consistent throughout problems as well.

The student started partial quotient division in school, so we worked on that for most of the time before talking through her English assignment (concerning folktales).

Today, I helped the student with his homework assignment, which covered quadratic equations. He stated that he had not understood when his teacher went over the material in class, so I broke down the steps for finding the roots. He seemed to get in the hang of it after a while. During today's session, I could tell he was trying very hard to stay focused and positive. We ended up getting through all of his homework.
