Session Summaries by Statistics Tutors

Today the student worked on fractions. First, we practiced reducing fractions, using a sheet I brought. She had some trouble with this but started getting the hang of it. Next, we reviewed adding fractions with different denominators. We used the multiplication tables chart to help her find the right denominator. We also practiced these on her calculator, since a calculator can be used on most of the test. We did some multiplication and division of fraction problems from our practice book, doing some on paper and some on the calculator. Her attitude was great, as usual!

Today the student worked through 16 word problems from topics ranging from percentages, algebra, formulas, ratios, and fractions. Included were a few word problems that could not be solved due to lack of information. She is creating a Word file with all the word problems we do in these sessions so she will have a "library" of word problems to review anytime in preparation for any quiz or test or exam where word problems will be included. The math topics are random so she has to analyze each one without knowing up front what the math area or grade is. Critical thinking is required in determining how to set up each word problem, whether enough information is provided, and how to do the required math. We will continue to focus on all types of middle school word problems.

Today the students and I worked on going in-depth into their current topic in math, which is understanding/graphing inequalities. We spent a lot of time really trying to understand what the purpose of a variable is, and how an inequality explains how it might fit on a number line. To strengthen those areas, we also practiced converting from word problems into algebraic expressions and combining fractions.

Today was a breakthrough day; she finally got the courage to communicate with me on her math. In the time we worked, I determined several areas that need a little work. Some of her struggles come directly from never completely mastering the multiplication tables. So we will start from the basics and progress from there. I am encouraged by the progress she has made by connecting with me socially, a HUGE step in the academic progress. When a student trusts the teacher, then learning can begin.

Today was a good day! The student was excited about telling time and counting money. The sessions are generally starting with writing, and we end with reading. I find that he really enjoys reading but does demonstrate some difficulty with writing. Once I get him to use his sounds, he is fine but it is hard to get started. We will continue working on writing. I did leave the word sort that we completed today for the SH and CH digraphs. He can continue to practice reading those words daily and even spelling some of them. I look forward to seeing him on Thursday.

Today was a good session with the student! She said that she did really well on her quiz last week. She specifically started proofs and the different properties of equality so the majority of the practice was around coming up with the proofs and going through all the steps. It is a very new concept, so I'd definitely recommend more practice. She has always done a great job of showing all of her work, so I think that will be really helpful in getting her more comfortable with the proofs. I'll be bring more practice on that for next time and giving her some more things to work on!
