Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"During this session, we continued to work on electron configuration but we also were practicing Lewis structures and ionic bonding. We spent a lot of time going over the charges of the ions that form from the different elements. This was an extra session that we were doing in order to prepare the student for a quiz the next day. She got a 91 on this quiz which is a huge improvement from how she was doing before."
"We went over some thermodynamic concepts and calculations. We used the Q=MCAT equation and reaction stoichiometry to figure out relative enthalpies and heats of reactions. We also went over Hess' Law and how to use the above equation to find information about closed chemical systems. The student was struggling the most with Hess' law at first just because it seems like such a disaster. As soon as she heard some more details about how the law works, she was quickly able to handle all of the assigned problems."
"The student and I worked on Chapter 3 which involves conversions between centigrade and Kelvin temperatures. It also addresses the conversions between atmospheres, torr, mm Hg, and kPa. We also covered state transformation between gas, liquid, and solids and the triple point. The relationship between vapor pressure and atmospheric pressures was covered. We also covered boiling of water."
"In this session we continued our studies of atomic theory, including the Thomson plum pudding model, the gold foil experiment, and the line spectrum of hydrogen. I gave the student a PowerPoint presentation on the covered topics."
"In this session, the student and I reviewed the second and third lessons of the new semester. This primarily covered chemical equilibrium. She had no issues understanding the underlying concept or how to apply it to practice problems. Next week, we will begin our discussion of acids and bases, which tends to be fairly difficult, so it's good to see that she is fully caught up after our extended break. I will write a practice exam for next week to ensure that she remembers reaction rate and equilibria before we move on."
"In this session, the student and I went over various concepts such as gas laws and stoichiometry. The purpose of the session was to review the information covered for the final exam out of a list of 10 topics. During the session, he was spectacular and able to work on the majority of problems without an issue. The only ones that gave him some slight issues were the gas law problems, which had to do with figuring out which equation to use. However, I think it was just a fluke and that with some time to sit down and think more about what the problem is asking for he can easily work on the problems. Leaving the session I have no concerns. It was a pleasure to work with him."
