Writing Tutoring review by Jeremy in Rowlett, TX
Tonight we reviewed through the same spelling list as we did on Monday. duplicate spelled each word and used each word appropriately in a sentence. The student did a great job with this. We also did a few activities in the spelling book, in which the student proofread sentences and pointed out the misspelled word, followed by correctly spelling the word. The student did a great job of this. We then moved to reading. I could immediately notice that the student's reading confidence had grown, and attempted sounding out words that were new to him, instead of skipping them/not trying to pronounce them. I allowed the student to pick out which animals he wanted to read about, it seemed as if he really enjoyed that part. The student chose to read about the different cats, tigers, jaguars, leopards, cheetahs, and domestic cats that do tricks, brown bears, and dogs. After helping the student out with a word, the student did not make the same mistake again. I tried a new method in which I read a paragraph aloud, and then the student followed up by reading the same paragraph. This method was extremely successful, as he immediately improved his reading (more fluent, and pronunciation was much clearer). Unfamiliar words were read with better speed, more confidence and pronunciation was much better. I will use this method again moving forward as I see this helped the student out. We also read from a reading comprehension book, and the student did a great job with the reading. The student's comprehension was tested by questions which followed the reading as well as my own questions. The student did a great job with all the questions he faced. The student was a pleasure to work with this evening.

We worked on finding evidence in the reading to support conclusions. We also worked on finding word definitions using context clues. She should find a book to read for next time.

We began the session with the student's weekly math problem, which he answered in short order (although not without making a small error, which he identified himself). Then we went to work reading his Babe Ruth biography. It was the first time I'd seen the student so engaged in a book, and he answered his study questions much more thoroughly than usual. His handwriting, too, was much clearer and neater this time. Excellent work.

The student's social studies presentation is tomorrow. I helped him edit and add a short video on the Kansas-Nebraska Act to his PowerPoint, and he practiced his presentation with me. While he still needs to write a conclusion and copy his bibliography from a Word document to the PowerPoint, I feel that he is almost ready.

Today the student worked on her leadership PowerPoint project. We went through lots of Greek books looking for more information to put in her presentation. She has done a great job focusing her thesis and presentation.

With both students, I went over correcting paragraphs. Both boys did well with the paragraphs, but still need some additional fine tuning. For Student A, I worked with him on expanding his essay. His writing has improved, and the quality of his essays seems directly related to his interest in the material. I worked to expand his arguments and the points he makes so that they can become more thorough and multi-dimensional. I did the same will Student B, but with a focus on more cohesion and structure. It's clear he knows what to talk about. The issue comes from translating his ideas into a structured piece. We will continue to work on this. I've given them both homework that involves rewriting their pieces with more detail, with Student A's essay prompt and scope being significantly larger.
