Session Summaries by Writing Tutors

Writing Tutoring review by Margaret in Jacksonville, FL
We started with 15 minutes of free writing on the student's story project to get the gears turning, then we went over his mock outline. It was sparse on the introduction, so we took several published samples and read the opening paragraphs of the stories inside. I asked him questions about what kind of information those authors had provided in just a few lines and we translated that into what his introductions will need. We used a few examples from the style book to underline conclusions. Then he used the discussion to start writing his intro paragraph for the essay he'd outlined.

The student had come up with some new ideas for framing her paper, so we discussed how to incorporate those ideas and combine them with what she had already written. We also worked on fleshing out those ideas more fully. We went through my comments on her paper, and I made sure that she understood them all. We also discussed some general things to avoid when writing papers, both grammatically and logically. For the next meeting the student will have a complete rough draft of her paper and then we will work on the editing and formatting of her paper.

I read and marked up the student's narrative essay that was due today. He made a few grammar and word usage errors which we then discussed together. His creativity in storytelling was great! Then we did grammar practice identifying sentence errors and there are a few consistent issues we'll continue to address next week I think, but his grammar is generally way above his grade level.

Writing Tutoring review by Sarah in Jacksonville, FL
The student and tutor reviewed the student's progress on "How the Earth..." story and continued editing together. He had completed the story up to the introduction of the conflict and included many new ideas. Student and tutor examined how to move the pieces of the story around to make it more interesting and cohesive. The story is now over halfway complete and he will complete it for next session. Student and tutor then reviewed persuasive writing using the "brochure" of writing styles created in an earlier session. After reviewing this, the student and tutor read a list of possible prompts for a persuasive essay and student chose one to expand on. He chose "should college athletes be paid for playing?" and decided to take the stand that yes, they should. He then started a large "persuasion map" graphic organizer by first describing his thesis. Then, he expanded on three main reasons to support his thesis. Then, he wrote at least two facts or examples for each of the supporting reasons. After completing most of the persuasion map, he decided to re-tool his thesis to better match the reasoning stated. For next session, since it is the last session, the student and tutor will edit and "publish" the student's story and review the goals and expectations from the first session. Then the student and tutor will both state how these goals and expectations were or were not met and what the major takeaways of their sessions may be.

Writing Tutoring review by Eric in Jacksonville, FL
Today, the student and I focused our session on revision skills. We warmed up by reading and writing some two-sentence scary stories, and he once again displayed confidence, imagination, and speed in his writing. All writers, however, need good editors, and most good writers are good editors themselves. We approached revision skills from a number of angles, starting with a quick quiz where he matched renowned authors to their quotes about editing (he got 100%!). We then went through two of his school essays and revised them. As we went through, I referenced style guidelines such as "Omit needless words" and "Place the emphatic words of a sentence at the end" in order to illustrate the thinking behind our edits. We stopped as needed to hammer home certain guidelines, such as the difference between the active and passive voice, and which to use (active!). Finally, the student and I revised the story he wrote last week, "The Space Spy." For homework, he is incorporating our edits into a second draft. I look forward to reading the revised story!
