Writing Tutoring review by Alison in Framingham, MA
The student and I started Unit 8 in all her courses. I went over concepts from the units, giving her an overview of: postmodern artists and the move away from a Modernist emphasis on originality and authenticity; stages of human development as posited by Piaget and Vygotsky; and the three rhetorical appeals. We drafted the discussion post for art history, covering Sherrie Levine and appropriation art. I helped the student edit a short paper about the stages of human development and draft another comparing two stages proposed in Piaget's theory.

Writing Tutoring review by Kat in Framingham, MA
The student is continuing to revise his personal statement. We worked with revision strategies, such as reading out loud, to make small corrections and adjustments. I also introduced the concepts of passive and active voice to him, and worked with him to make his essay more active. We also brainstormed for his upcoming school projects and assignments, as well as for the book review section of his school applications. He will be continuing to work on revision and drafting this week.

Writing Tutoring review by Katie in Framingham, MA
The student decided today that he has had his fill of grammar and is now more interested in finding his own voice stylistically as a writer.  I'm excited about this prospect.  He has suggested that he'd like to investigate different forms of writing (poetry, novel, nonfiction, short story, persuasive, research, etc.) and determine what makes each style unique. He'd also like to determine how to pull elements so that he can write text that really grabs his readers and makes them connect.  Next time, we'll start looking through the writing manual.   Since this shift in emphasis was a surprise, we improvised today by going to the library and examining some E.E. Cummings.  We discussed emotional context, imagery, and the unique syntax choices he makes, and, in turn, the effects this has on the reader.  He has astute insights and seems to excel at literary interpretation.

Writing Tutoring review by Mari in Framingham, MA
We started by discussing the student's struggle with writing, especially timed writing exercises in class. She and I went over in detail all the types of writing assignments her English teacher assigns and evaluated her strengths and weaknesses. While she is very confident about SAT essays (she follows a study outline), she is less confident with in-class exercises (which she does not yet outline). We also discussed her study habits and schedule. We tried to plan how much time she will spend on her English class and made a schedule accordingly. Next week we will complete vocabulary exercises (to be used in her class writing assignments) and practice writing portfolios that coincide with her reading of Lord of the Flies.

Writing Tutoring review by Matthew in Framingham, MA
We discussed an essay that the student was handed back. The teacher gave him the opportunity to resubmit it with revisions. I helped him re-work his thesis, and he added additional analysis that clarified any unclear ideas. We also lengthened certain parts, while combining and editing others. Overall, it was a very productive session.
