Session Summaries by Writing Tutors

Writing Tutoring review by DeAnna in Cleveland, OH
The student and I discussed how to design a research study for her PhD methods class. She needs to complete three model research plans, one for quantitative analysis, qualitative, and mixed analysis. I wrote out her words into an outline she will use as an ungraded, draft plan for her instructor.

Writing Tutoring review by Carolyn in Cleveland, OH
Today we went over grammar, parts of speech, and comma rules. We discussed parts of speech in compound and complex sentences. We created sentences, and went over vocabulary. I provided the student with a vocabulary list with which he will define and make sentences for each of our meetings. He is going to revise his thesis statement/introductory sentence for homework as well.

We began the session by discussing the assignment guidelines and rubric. We went over her first article (1 of 4) that she wanted to use for her assignment. We discussed the article, took notes, outlined what we were going to write, and the student began to write her summary and analysis of the article for her paper.

Writing Tutoring review by Hannah in Cleveland, OH
This week the student and I worked on his journal entry and spelling words. At the beginning of the session I quizzed him on the spelling words he had gotten wrong from the previous test. He was able to get a few more correct but still needed some work. We moved on to the journal for the main part of the session. It took him a little bit to pick a question he wanted to answer, but once he found one he came up with some great ideas for sentences. He wrote more slowly this time, with my encouragement, and had a much neater paragraph than last week. After writing he went back through and together we identified what letters he needed to make more clear. At the end of the session we went back to the spelling words. I had him look at the quiz from the beginning and go over the correct spelling of the words, then we did another quiz. This time he only got 3 words wrong. I encouraged him to keep looking over the words on his own so that we could do another quiz next time.

Writing Tutoring review by Andrew in Cleveland, OH
On Monday the student and I went over the final draft of the first paper for his class, which begins on Monday. He successfully compiled the various paragraphs we had worked on into a coherent and flowing draft at a level that far exceeded my expectations. We went over a few points of fine-tuning and added in some extra detail and support for his paper, then typed it up and printed it. We practiced reading the paper aloud, which he will have to do in class. Overall, he worked extremely diligently on this paper and has shown great improvement. We plan to meet again next week once he's had his first class to discuss further development of his writing, working toward the culminating 7-10 page paper for his class.

Writing Tutoring review by Cheryl in Cleveland, OH
Student 1 and I did a writing exercise in which he completed a story that was already started for him with the cartoons already supplied. He decided how the story would end and drew out the next two cartoon pictures. Next we started a new story in which he made drawings first and agreed to write the story without with me next week. Student 2 and I worked on the rough draft of his report on lizards, looked up material online and filled in all the questions. Then we tried a fun online exercise in which the student writes a funny homework excuse paper for his teacher.
