Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We spent time going over introductions, goals, expectations, and so on. We then spent the entire lesson going over the SAT format, the best ways to study, test taking skills, and finally the essay section. We went over how to craft an effective essay, the rubric, read examples of good and bad essays, practiced making outlines, and started brainstorming examples that could be used for support in essays. The student seemed to enjoy it more as the lesson progressed. I left him with some notes and some a practice exam to take."
"We reviewed the essays the student wrote for homework. We discussed structure, and sticking to the theme of the essay that has been defined, and using more sophisticated vocabulary. We also worked on sentence completion and correction, and discussed the flashcards she created to review vocabulary."
"We covered difficult problems from an ACT prep book. The student seems to have difficulty with sequence problems and remembering terms from arithmetic such as lowest common multiple and greatest common factor. We will work on this skill in the future."
"The student and I reviewed the reading comprehension and verbal sections she took last week. The verbal score will improve as she continues to drill vocabulary, and I think she can improve greatly on the reading as long as she continues to practice close reading and avoids making quick assumptions, which she has a tendency to do. We will continue with online sessions."
"Today the student and I went over the results from the practice test she had taken on Saturday. Both she and her mother were very pleased to see her math raw score go up by 4 points. We made note of things she missed that she needed to know, such as negative exponents and angles of intersecting lines as well as a line intersecting parallel lines. We also discussed what it means for something to be raised to a fraction exponent, although we do not think she has seen that in school yet."
"Today we worked on substitution and plugging in answer options on math problems. We also reviewed vocabulary and reading questions. The student should take another test for homework and then we will compare her score with her first test."
