"We did review for the exam. We covered localized and delocalized electrons, acid and bases, pKas, and figured out the major form in a given pH, acid base equilibrium, rating nitrogen's lone pair based on pKa, drawing 3D structures, and Lewis acids and bases."
"We went over problems on an example exam. She's having a bit of trouble with resonance structures and determining hybridization, so we worked on that for a bit, and then went on to Newman projections, which she now thinks may not be on the exam. We will be going over acidity and basicity in another session."
"We went over several review problems with a little bit of new stuff. This included acids and bases and specifically pka values and inductive effects. The student worked out several problems regarding chair conformations including drawing chair flips converting to the flat ring forms. She also worked on SN1, SN2, E1, and E2 problems to get a little more practice in predicting products and deducing which mechanism(s) are likely based on conditions provided. At the end we went over calculating degrees of unsaturation and naming E/Z alkenes. She struggled most with SN1, SN2, E1, and E2 reactions, which isn't too concerning because understanding which one to use takes a lot of practice and most students struggle with this topic. I gave her some problems to try on her own to give her even more practice."
"We went through conjugated dienes. We covered converting a given name into structure for dienes and identifying the conjugated compounds. We also discussed the identification of dienes and dienophiles. The student was able to predict the products for Diels Alder reaction with the correct stereochemistry and perform retrosynthesis of Diels Alder products. At the end of the session, the student was confident about the topics covered in session."
"We worked on a practice exam covering mostly IR and NMR problems. The NMR was new material, so those concepts were worked on more. He has a pretty good understanding of IR already and could answer all of the IR related problems very well. Next session, we will continue to work on the same practice test and cover more NMR."
"We worked on disubstituted cyclohexanes. This included drawing cis and trans isomers, chair conformations, and doing chair flips. We also labeled equatorial and axial groups, and continued practicing identifying R and S isomers."
