Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Planned study guides and methods for upcoming tests (history and geometry). Outlined schedule for upcoming assignments. Finished organizing folders in iPad. Set up appointment and email with English teacher regarding finished but ungraded work. Discussed summer volunteer/program opportunities."
"The student wanted to review square root functions and how to solve problems with square roots for a test. She had a worksheet of problems that she had completed prior to my arrival and we discussed the problems. She has an upcoming quiz on logarithmic and exponential functions. She had a worksheet to guide the discussion which included how to graph the functions (with translations), how to solve logarithms (e.g. log 1000 = ?), how to simplify exponential expression, and how to solve word problems that ask for exponential growth or decay, continuously compounding interest, and compounding interest at fixed intervals. After completion of the worksheet, the things that she needs to focus on are the equation for calculating interest and when to use the compound interest formula versus continuous compound interest."
"Today we continued our now-familiar pattern of re-reading and discussing the cold-read text from last week. I have started asking the student to write something about the text. This gives him a chance to practice spelling, demonstrate his comprehension of the text, and also begin to start learning how to write in more complex ways. We will continue to write and add more writing as a component to each session. We also reviewed spelling words from last session. The student remembers most of the corrected spellings, which is awesome! On to new words! I also gave the student a new text to cold read. I am not timing/checking wpm right now; we will do that again at the beginning of March. The student found a few more spelling and vocabulary words in The Great Brain, and then we continued our reading and discussion of that text."
"We worked on the book report essay this session. His writing was rather cogent, but there were still many errors. We worked through the errors and worked briefly on Math: specifically finding the value of angles. All in all, he performed well in this class."
"The student and I worked on her book report. She is going to finish composing the report and we will make corrections on the conventions of writing in the morning."
"Discussed and had the student work on Chapter 10 Chemistry. Problem set worksheet was completed. Topic was primarily the association of specific heat to energy obtained among various substances. The basic equation can be manipulated in several ways in order to get heat (Joules), temperature, and mass."
"Today we went over fractions, percentages, multiplication, and a little algebra. He is very bright and only showed a weakness with some terms used in mathematical story problems and with turning fractions into percentages. We will go deeper into math next time, and work with his favorite book to formulate topics for writing paragraphs. I gave him some related math homework for next time."
"We covered the microeconomics concept of the competitive market including the market assumptions for competition and economic efficiency. We analyzed several problems about competitive markets for several goods and determining how much of each good will be produced along with the Pareto effect and dead weight loss."
"We reviewed the CPU scheduling algorithms covered in the last class (general priority scheduling and round-robin scheduling). We also went over some of the exercises that touched on material we've seen so far. I gave the student some reading and exercises to do."
"Today we looked at trigonometry problems including sines, cosines, and tangents. We solved for missing angles using arcsines, arccosines, and arctangents. We solved word problems involving angles of depression and elevation. It was a really good session."
"We covered Math and reading. It was a great session. He is making progress. I left him with extra practice. We used Singapore math and Dolch sight words. We also read from a book. I am very proud of his efforts."
"This session was just a general review of things related to memory leaks with data structures. We also had a discussion of copy constructors, and overloaded operators."
