Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I reviewed his homework assignments. Topics covered included an introduction to arithmetic and geometric sequences and series."
"The student earned a score of 85% on her topic 7 math test, which is a significant improvement from her last score! This week, we are looking at topic 13 (her current topic), and if possible, we will look at topic 9 (a make-up topic) as well. During this session, we covered topic 13 only. Topic 13 consists of perimeter, area, and volume problems. I remember teaching her about perimeter and area when she was studying for the placement exam, and this time around, she seemed much more confident in her geometry knowledge. I didn't need to do too much explaining for the more straightforward area and perimeter sections. She did need the practice, but she understood the difference between area and perimeter very well. For volumes, she needed a little more help when the shape consisted of multiple rectangular prisms stacked on top of each other. She responded well to visual cues -- drawing a figure and labeling it in a few different ways. The sections she struggled the most with were those that dealt with surface area. We ended up spending a good amount of time going over the difference between surface area and volume -- she just didn't understand the concept and how to apply it. She gained a better understanding when we took a box out of the pantry and replicated a couple of problems in the book using the box. This was the last thing we did; it would be a good idea to review it tomorrow."
"The student and I reviewed another practice AP calculus multiple choice test. Among the topics covered included: implicit differentiation, related rates, and first and second derivatives of functions."
"We covered more trig identities, mostly using Pythag and the fundamental relations. The student required lots of support, but this is expected as this material is a big jump from what he had been doing."
"The student wanted to improve her score on a test she had taken in the past and so we worked on the problem set from the test."
"The student and I worked on a little review, and a little future stuff. We worked a little on sequences and then moved to how to deal with exponents presented in fractions."
