Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student is learning more details with acid and base equations. Today, we discussed redox equations for three sections of Chapter 13. We currently are going over basic definitions, examples of equations, and concepts such as oxidizing agents, reducing agent, and other details."
"In the week since the student and I last met, he did a lab, covered more calorimetry, and learned about Hess's law/enthalpy of reactions. We first worked through some questions pertaining to his lab, and then stuck with the trend of practice problems (we did several quantitative calor. questions, and a few conceptual, and several Hess's law/enthalpy problems). I think for the most part the student is on top of this material - he made some small mistakes, but also did some of the trickier problems with ease. He had some issues with the conceptual aspects of the equations that he is learning, so we spent 20 minutes talking through the qualitative calorimetry problem. For Thursday I suggested he bring actual problems from his class rather than me providing sample problems, as his professor seems to have a unique style. He confirmed that his next test is still several weeks off, but it will cover a lot of material."
"We had an excellent first session! The student is very polite, pleasant and understands his chemistry concepts very well. We covered approximately 2.5 chapters of chemistry today. We began the session with scientific measurements, how they are made, and how accurate they may or may not be. We went over the rules for significant figures, and the student was able to correctly identify how many sig figs in multiple numbers. We then discussed two ways of rounding numbers: zero to four, the number stays, five thru nine the number increases by one; and rounding with even and odd following numbers. The student showed how well he is able to convert units in chemistry and manipulate equations. We finished with a discussion of subparticles and how they relate to each other in an atom. The student showed his excellent understanding of English; I am very impressed with his command of the language."
"The student has completed most of his review of chapter 11. We spent today's session working through some challenge problems from chapter 13, which relates to the kinetics of chemical reactions. This included reaction mechanisms, net reactions, intermediates, rate laws, rate/ equilibrium constants, and fast/ slow reaction steps. By the end of the session, we were generally able to come to a solution for these types of rate law problems. I encouraged him to work through more introductory problems from this chapter to ensure he has a strong foundation with this material."
"The student is doing well learning the basics again. This week we covered substances and mixtures, phases of matter, physical and chemical properties and changes, and energy. I think the student is doing well studying the material, and it shows that he has internalized lessons that we can make concrete during the sessions. Next week we'll move on to specific heat, which is a more mathematical based lesson, which will hopefully be a good sign of progress for him."
"The student is grasping the concepts behind the chemistry labs well. He had a titration lab this week which is pretty straightforward stuff, but he had a few questions about analyzing titration graphs. We also reviewed thermodynamics a little from his previous lab."
