Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"In today's session, we first reviewed the sections of the test that I had assigned the student for practice. Compared to how he scored on his first attempt at ACT questions, he has already improved by a great deal! He only missed 2-3 questions per every 15-20 questions in each section, compared to less than 50% correct on his initial attempt. We then did a passage or two in each section and thoroughly reviewed why his answers were wrong or right. I wanted to pay extra attention to reading, because I believe that is his most challenging section currently. We talked more about active reading and the use of certain strategies while taking the test. Although time is not something I am concentrating on right now, it is a timed test and I told him that within a few weeks, we will start focusing on time once his accuracy gets better."
"We reviewed the math questions remaining from our previous session today. We then went over any English questions the student had from her homework and discussed the reading homework in detail. This included rereading and discussing a particularly challenging passage. We finished the session by discussing general strategies for science and practicing some passages. She did very well on these and will finish the last two for homework, in addition to taking the second reading test in the book. We will meet again on Saturday afternoon."
"I had the student practice timed passages of the English and Science sections. We discussed her reasoning process, especially on any problems with incorrect answers, and occasionally discussed grammar concepts like appositives and other parenthetical statements. She did extremely well, showing considerable improvement over her first practice test and earlier sessions with me. She had no problems with finishing on time, usually even having a minute or two left over. Next session, I plan to work with timing again in the Math and Reading sections."
