Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I spent 80 minutes working on Critical Reading and 40 minutes on the Writing section. I think that the most important step for her to take will be to simply study vocabulary words extensively; this will help her do significantly better, and her reading abilities on the longer passages is already improving."
"The student and I started by going over the SAT math section she completed since our last meeting. We reviewed common techniques for solving questions with variables in the answers. We will continue to practice this next week. Next, we went over counting problems (combinations, permutations, etc.). She did well on practice problems over common question types on the concepts. We focused on rereading these types of word problems to clarify the given restrictions. She had also completed a practice writing multiple choice section, correctly answering 10/12. We did additional practice over comma rules and pronoun/ antecedent questions. She showed good improvement at using the underlined information to identify the likely error. For next week, she will complete a reading and writing section."
"Today was my first session with this student and we spent the time reviewing her practice test. She told me that she doesn't need help with time management and that she usually has time left over at the end of each section. She told me that she feels confident with reading and grammar, but that math, especially geometry, is a weak spot for her. She skipped several questions on the math section of her practice test, so I plan on working with her to reinforce the math fundamentals, as well as giving her strategies for making educated guesses. I also plan on working with her to review some basic grammar concepts as well as skills for annotating texts during the reading section. I encouraged her to sign up for an SAT word of the day email to help bolster her vocabulary skills. She was very involved in the session and was willing to ask questions when she had them. She seems committed to improving her skills and I'm looking forward to getting to work on specific topics."
