Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"During this session, we went over a book summary the student had written for a grade. I also had him do 10 minutes of writing and write several concluding paragraphs."
"This evening the student answered the questions I left for her last week for homework. Once she answered these questions she began reading within the book again and taking notes for the next hour. Next, she began to incorporate information into her journal, and then we discussed how to expand her writing to add more details (asking How, What, When, Where, and Why). I left homework for her to complete. She must add at least five sentences to each of her journal comments, so I can review and give feedback when I return this Thursday. Her reading comprehension skills are good; however, we are constantly working on adding details, and expanding her responses so that they are more analytic."
"Today was a great session with the student. He had an in-class essay on a passage from a Greek book that was peer-reviewed, so we looked it over. We looked at the comments the classmate wrote, and I asked whether he agreed with the comments, and how he could improve the sentence or paragraph. We talked a lot about how he could improve his writing. We ended up focusing mainly on how to find the theme and create a strong topic sentence. We looked back at the passage from the book and brainstormed new ideas. I gave him homework for this week. I gave him a notebook and wrote short prompts or quotes and asked him to pick 3 and write 1-2 pages on the topic in the notebook. I told him that practicing writing for fun will help improve his academic writing. I also asked him to read books for fun in his spare time. I've seen great progress in him so far, and am looking forward to his writing continuing to improve!"
