"Looked over English sections the student completed since last meeting and completed another section together. We completed a Reading section together, with me trying to get the student to focus on big themes and structures while reading, and to ignore details. This is a reading strategy he needs to master. We worked through two Science sections, focusing on reading as little of the text as possible. The student is doing very well with this strategy for Science. We ended with a discussion (including his mother) of whether he should take the optional Writing part of the test in April. (We concluded that he should and will start to work on it at our next meeting.)"
"The student and I went through the results from her most recent ACT test date, and analyzed her strengths and weaknesses. She excelled at the critical reading section. Today we mostly concentrated on Science, because it is entirely new material. She will practice analyzing and tracing variables through the Research Summary questions."
"We focused on the Reading section. We talked about strategies for staying focused while reading a boring passage. We talked about asking yourself questions about what you are reading when you get to the end of a paragraph. The idea is to make sure you know what happened in that paragraph before going on to the next one."
