Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We started preparing for her midterm today by going through all of the concepts for the test. We went through them and then did some examples on the ones she asked for specific help on. For next time, we will focus on all of the other ones to ensure that she is strong in every aspect of the test."
"Today we reviewed basic concepts including: definition of a function, odd/even functions, factoring/expanding quadratic equations. The student stated the majority of the material is still in his brain due to taking the class last quarter but wants to continue going over material because his professor moved too fast. We discovered that explaining things visually with illustrations helps him understand content better. He said he felt excited to practice more factoring problems after I showed a visual way to approach factoring quadratic equations We started to go over problems from his old exams and plan to go over homework problems as they are assigned. I think going over concepts discussed in class will help reinforce the material for the student because the material does not always sink in solidly the first time. Looking forward to the next session!"
"The student and I continued working with substitution, incorporating double substitution and trig anti-derivatives. The student is doing very well with the core concepts. We also looked ahead at the next section, which will address integration by parts."
"In this session, we went over differentiation using the power rule. The student seemed to be having some issues with the application of a couple of algebraic properties, like transforming radicals into fractional exponents and turning negative exponents into positive. However, after we worked together on some problems he had for practice, he understood each one of the algebraic properties. Finally, we also went over the identification of the tangent line of a polynomial function at a specified point. He understood this problem really well. Conclusively, I asked him to finish his homework so that he could get used to the algebraic properties involved in the derivatives of different functions."
"The student completed an online quiz on basic integration and area under curves. Then, we started a new lesson on integration by substitution. This topic is quite challenging. We went through many different types of problems, and she said she will try some more problems on her own from the online textbook. We will continue with substitution for integration next session."
"The student and I did SAT prep. We went through Sections 3 and 4 of the first practice test in his SAT workbook. We reviewed algebraic concepts like completing the square, factoring, and circle equations; we also worked our way through word problems involving statistical concepts and other various mathematical concepts."
