Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today, we reviewed the student's math and grammar homework before launching into a discussion of the reading and science passages. She has trouble with timing here, and so that will be my main focus for the next session -- I have a lot of experience speeding students up, but it's something that takes work over time, so we need to get started right away!"
"The student and I reviewed the math section of her ACT test results. It seems that about half her errors were due to guessing on questions she was less careful about, and several others were word questions from which she had difficulty extracting information from. For word problems, I encouraged her to gather information sentence-by-sentence to avoid being "intimidated" or otherwise by the bulk of the question. She was able to employ this strategy during the session, but it would be useful to remind her periodically as she practices on her own. Some geometry/trig questions were missed because she has not studied them in class yet, while some other missed questions were due to loss of concentration on the question. For example, one question asked for the sin(a+b), where the student was expected to find the entire quantity "a+b" rather than find "a" and "b" individually (which would have been impossible). Again, she was able to do this during the session with prompting and shows that she has the skill set to do well; she just needs to retain concentration and not be intimidated by multi-step questions."
"Today we moved our focus to the science section. Worked with the student on dividing her time strategically between the passage and questions, and making predictions for each question. She performed very well."
