Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student has a quiz approaching, so I helped her review for that. It involves limits and derivatives. She made sure to review the differences between continuity and differentiability, and that while continuity does not imply differentiability, differentiability does imply continuity. In addition, she will review graphs and their relationship to the derivative at various points, and how the shape of a graph affects differentiability over the domain. Lastly, she should definitely get comfortable with the two alternate forms of the definition of the derivative, something which will form the cornerstone of her calculus education. She doesn't find the material too difficult."
"The student is beginning to prepare for his final exam in his math class. We spent our session working on a couple of the more difficult topics, solving trig equations, and simplifying trig identities. The student had a review assignment for his last quiz of the semester that we were able to complete during our time together. As he begins to prepare for exams next week, the student will have his semester review to begin to study."
"The student is in a college calculus class that is presented in a very challenging manner. She has worked hard this semester but is not getting much support in applying the concepts learned in lecture to the problems assigned as homework and on tests. She loves having concepts presented visually and responded extremely well to me using some less technical language to explain the concepts and their applications in common-sense ways. Since I'm familiar with the class she is taking, I was able to highlight some important concepts immediately. At the end of our session, she said, "I learned more calculus in this hour and a half than I have in any of my class sessions!""
"The student is preparing for a exam that will fulfill an academic requirement. We worked through problems involving first-order linear approximations of the value of functions for computer-based homework."
"The student is preparing for his final by working on the review online. We worked on some practice problems from the review. These problems mostly consisted of limits. There were a few derivative questions. There were also some questions where he had to find the equation of a tangent line. I believe there a couple of questions that asked for implicit differentiation. He needs to focus on this concept a little more."
"The student is preparing for his final exam coming up soon, so he started by working through some of the homework for his final sections. Topics discussed included finding limits using L'Hopital's rule, and determining minimum and maximum values using derivatives. He picked up on everything pretty quickly, so I'm feeling confident that I'll be able to help him sort out any issues he's having before the final."
