Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I practiced English together using the introductory chapter and reviewed science also. I asked her to take another timed practice test independently, though I suggested she take English and Math one morning and Reading and Science on another morning. It will be good to see where she is improving and where we need to really focus for these last couple weeks."
"The student and I studied for her upcoming Chemistry exam. She should do really well. She understood all of the concepts very well, and practiced the problems nicely. The concepts covered Electron configuration, Lewis dot structure, valence electrons, and ions."
"The student and I covered the basics of hypothesis testing. Then we went over some homework problems that she did and I made sure she had completed them correctly. At the end of the session we did a couple problems she had not started on yet to make sure she fully understood everything we went over at the session."
"With Student 1, again worked on reading Catullus poems in preparation for a quiz and test, and recognizing subjunctives and their function. With Student 2, worked on how to form adverbs from adjectives, and looked ahead to how to form the future tense, which he seemed to grasp quickly."
"We spent most of today's session doing some homework the student needed help with. We did a math worksheet on long division and multiplication. We also did some reading homework involving inferences. He had to read several short paragraphs and answer questions based on making inferences. We reviewed how to identify key words and phrases that are crucial to be able to make inferences about a given paragraph. To his advantage, this skill is an important one on the verbal section of the exam so we spent a little extra time on it. We ended the session going over some high yield vocabulary seen on the exam. Beyond learning definitions, I encouraged him to discuss the vocabulary words and formulate sentences which forces him to put these words to use. He hopes to do a bit more exam prep at the next session."
"The student and I made a PowerPoint presentation on the French rapper MC Solaar. She has demonstrated progress in her comprehension of French."
"The student had a test on Friday so we spent a long time going through all of her review packets. It mostly covered redox, solubility, and empirical/molecular formulas. Her final for the trimester is next week so we are meeting twice next week. "
"The student and I went over his oral final and talked about some strategies for preparing for the test on his own. He's going to memorize his answers and be able to answer reasonable follow-up questions to his responses. He's also going to type the question prompts into a language translation website so he can "listen" to the questions as they'd be asked by a French speaker."
"Reviewed a 35-question practice writing section placing an emphasis on locating subjects, verbs and objects within sentences. Reviewed a 20-question math section placing an emphasis on number picking and graphic geometry. Reviewed the sentence completion portion of a reading section with an emphasis on manipulating sentence structure to deduce correct answer choices. Discussed options for SAT and ACT test dates. Assigned homework and agreed to meet at the same time next week."
"The student showed me a grammar assignment he had finished. After we reviewed sections of his course book, he made some revisions to answers for the assignment. He had finished a short writing assignment which we reviewed. After, we talked about the assignment directions, he made some revisions to his writing assignment. He had a midterm exam which he had studied for from several sections in his course book. We reviewed these sections further as preparation for his exam."
"We went through questions she had on the latest chapter to prepare for her test, and we went over questions she missed on her quiz."
"The student and I read Elephant and Piggy books and worked on several longer words, including TOMORROW and INTERESTING. He's really progressing and has started to read with inflection, which is really exciting."
