Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We continued with our review in preparation for midterms. We discussed issues the student had with any of the Chapter 3 homework I asked him to complete. Also, we worked on a comprehensive review of all pertinent sections in Chapter 4, which were the sections covered in his class. We are going to continue with this comprehensive review during our next session, which will focus on a comprehensive review of Chapter 5, as well as prepare for an upcoming quiz that will take place this Thursday. The student did all the homework I asked him to complete and is taking more of an active role in his preparation for midterms."
"We continued with systems of equations. This time we went over multiplying and adding or subtracting the two equations to eliminate a variable. The student did well, but he often makes mistakes regarding positive or negative numbers. We will continue to work on this next session."
"We continued working on a Chapter 5 practice test that the student needs to finish by Friday. Once again, I reviewed calculating the sum of interior angles for both regular and irregular polygons. This is the main concept covered in the test, and the problems provide a good set of examples to learn the concepts. He is understanding things slowly but steadily."
"We continued working on his assignment. This consisted of basic probability calculations and data characterization. The student was comfortable with the material, but he needed time to outline everything step by step to make his calculations. The pacing for this session was slow, but we still got a significant amount of work done."
"We continued working on quadratic equations and started by reviewing how to solve quadratics. We used factoring, square root, and completing the square to find the solutions for different quadratic equations. The student is still having some trouble applying square roots to solve quadratics, and I will continue to work with him until the test with this technique. We worked more with completing the square, and we talked more about using square roots to solve as the final step in the solution. He is still doing well with this technique, and it is usually the hardest part of quadratic equations."
"We continued working on solving systems of equations using substitution. I coached the student through twelve problems from her homework and helped her set up the equations for the last two word problems. I also inquired about her interest in having extra practice problems to work on outside of sessions to help build basic skills on adding/subtracting negative numbers and solving for an unknown variable. She was interested, and I will provide materials next session."
