"We went over a vocabulary heavy session since that is the hardest part of the test for her. We went over the test first without a dictionary to look up words she didn't know. I encouraged her to use other strategies to understand the word's meaning and find the right answer if a word's exact definition didn't come readily to her mind. After, we looked up each word she didn't know and then she decided whether to change her answer in light of the new information."
"The session went smoothly. The student has a very solid grasp of the reading/writing questions, so we devoted a good bit of our time to Math. We worked on function composition, negative exponents, geometric reasoning involving triangles, and a few other miscellaneous topics. On the writing front, we did paragraph improvements and error identifications involving punctuation and subject/verb agreement. I believe the most important next step is to get some rigorous practice on the essay. I will also be assigning the student practice sections out of a SAT guidebook to do before our next session, so that we can go over particularly difficult problems together and so that he can get some more practice with timing and pacing."
"We worked on two Critical Reading sections with test conditions and timing. The student got almost all of the answers correct, including on some difficult passages with which he felt he had trouble. Most of the questions he didn't answer correctly for the vocabulary section were simply from not knowing the words used, so I encouraged him to continue reading and using the vocabulary flashcards. For the most part, though, the student did very well and used his time effectively. I think we both felt very good about the work he did today. Next week we will continue to work with time and a variety of passages, and will probably explore some of the Sentence Corrections."
