Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We reviewed the new words we learned this week, then ran through exercises I had created, based on our readings in the War of the Worlds and using the ISEE common words. He was super eager to get to the book and I read a section from book 2 and we discussed the vocabulary there, and I asked him questions about the contents to check his understanding. We will continue to do this. He's pretty accurate."
"We spent the time reordering books from the library, selecting sources already at his library, and finding other online sources he can use to narrow his focus. He and his mother committed to getting to the library before our next meeting."
"The first student and I had a lot to catch up. She had turned in her essay, taken her Lord of the Flies test, a social studies test, and a math test. We had prepared together for both her essay and English test, and she assured me she did well on both. She also reported that the other two tests went well for her. Her bookbag was clean and organized, and I was impressed with how she had managed. We then studied for her grammar test the next day. She had the most trouble with compound subjects and predicates, but we spent some time creating examples and identifying this part of speech in sentences. She did well with most of the other elements. We then chose an article for her current events assignment due Friday, read it together, and highlighted important elements. She will work on writing it later in the week. I worked with the other student on a social studies article he had to read, so we did that together, answering the comprehension questions embedded in the article. He has a spelling test on Friday, but we will study for that later in the week. He let me know that he did well on his math test on prime and composite numbers last week."
"This student is very good about getting through his homework. He breezed through his assignments, leaving him with only a little reading left to do. He works quickly, so sometimes I had to check that he was not rushing. He did well."
"This student needs help with phonics and sounds when he pronounces his words. I suggested that he continue to practice taking his time with words that are difficult to say. Next week, we will do hands-on games with spelling and grammar."
"This was a good session. The student continued to read "Pax," which she really enjoys. She does a great job. She is reading well, and her comprehension is excellent. She scored an 80% on her quiz that she took regarding her online passage. We also did an online English grammar game, and found some content areas we can brush up on together. A productive session!"
