"I started by having the student do a page of long division problems with single digit divisors. I can tell he has been practicing as the process is coming a lot more quickly for him and he only made one or two mistakes about the order of doing the long division. His multiplication is improving as well, but he still takes some time to work out multiples of numbers larger than six. For the rest of the lesson we looked at the Math section of his practice ACT. I advised him to first identify the question type. If it is algebra he should identify the variables, and if there are two of them try to find a way to relate one to the other. If it is geometry he should begin by drawing a picture and identifying the shapes involved, then consider which formulas apply to those shapes. He was able to correct most of his missed answers with a little guidance. I also told him to write down his work, as he said he didn't do this for many of the questions, which is why he got some wrong that he is entirely capable of doing. For homework I assigned him some long division with single-digit divisors and a page with two-digit divisors."
"We quickly reviewed the final parts of the Science section the student had finished since our last meeting. The student did extremely well, showing considerable improvement and comfort with Science questions. Then, for most of session, we reviewed the Math section of the full ACT practice test that the student had done a few weeks ago, focusing on the questions that the student had answered incorrectly or guessed on. We discussing the reasoning processes she had used and the one I would suggest for each question, working through the steps on paper. I occasionally taught a few Math concepts as needed, including logarithms. The student did very well, quickly understanding the concepts and steps I suggested, although will probably have the most trouble with Math as compared to English, Reading, and Science. Next session, I plan to work with timing."
"The student has steadily improved his ability on the ACT English exam. I know he will continue to work diligently."
