Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"This was our first session, so the student and I went over her needs and expectations, and reviewed the syllabi for the two courses she is taking this semester. We then worked on and finalized a journal assignment that is due this week. As she is going to be away for the next two weeks, we planned a tentative web meeting session in early October to help her prepare for some upcoming written assignments. As our schedules are flexible, we plan to adjust the duration and dates of our tutoring sessions as needed to help ensure that the student receives adequate support in completing written course assignments."
"Today we discussed Chapter Three, Job Order Costing. We started with understanding how overhead application works and how the rate is determined. We then went over applying overhead to the actual allocation base and the purpose. We did go over the 'bigger picture' and worked towards applying these concepts to a situation where one would have to make various journal entries and keep track of various accounts and the role manufacturing overhead plays in the overall process. At the end of the session, I think the student had a very strong idea of the logical process and where the numbers go. We will need a subsequent session to review the material."
"During this session, the student and I discussed atomic theory in preparation for his test this week. More specifically, we covered the details of quantum numbers, electron configuration, and orbital diagrams. We also covered periodic trends such as electro-negativity, ionization energy, electron affinity, atomic radius and metallic character."
"Went over a practice Physics IB test in preparation for the student's upcoming practice course exam. Specifically discussed techniques and methods for approaching problems the formulas for which aren't immediately obvious - concepts like unit homogeneity, and equation derivation from basic principles."
"During this session, the student and I reviewed his outline and flash cards and prepared for his history essay assignment. He did much better this week at listening, and he completed his outline and flash cards. His outline was a little vague, so we discussed how and where he needs to add detail. We also found one more secondary source for his research paper. He already had a working thesis and an excellent strategy for his paper. We discussed the importance of being succinct in essay writing and how his introductory paragraph needs to get right to the point of his paper. We also discussed how to recognize a weak thesis from a strong thesis. He demonstrated that he understands that a strong thesis must acknowledge the other side and that a thesis should be an argument with a clear purpose."
"We worked on the present and present perfect tenses. We also went over sentence structure and word order. As always, the student was motivated. We did some role play, reviewed worksheets, and completed exercises. Her conversational skills are improving."
